Tuckerman’s Role: Bringing Comfort and Support to Victims When They Need It Most

Tuckerman plays a unique and essential role within the Pomona Police Department. His primary responsibility is to provide support and comfort to victims and witnesses who have been exposed to trauma. In moments of distress, his calm and gentle demeanor helps create an environment of safety, critical during interviews and investigations. His presence helps individuals feel at ease, fostering a supportive environment that encourages healing and open communication.

K9 Facility dogs bring such value to both the City of Pomona and the Pomona Police Department. Beyond helping victims and witnesses of trauma, Tuckerman helps provide support to employees. “Tuckerman helps employees decompress after difficult situations and provides emotional support in a job that can be mentally and physically taxing,” Louie says. His presence is a reminder of the importance of well-being and compassion in high-stress environments.

The Inspiration and Training Behind Working with a Service Dog

CSO Louie was inspired to work with a facility dog after she witnessed the positive impact dogs have on people during a victim interview. "Observing how a dog’s presence can provide comfort and ease the stress of individuals going through traumatic experiences convinced me of their invaluable role.", says Louie. The ability to provide comfort to those in need and boost department morale motivated her to make Tuckerman an essential part of her work. Tuckerman is the second K9 facility dog CSO Louie has worked with. Her first facility dog, Satin, a yellow Labrador, is now retired.

In order to work with Tuckerman, CSO Louie completed specialized training with Canine Companions, a well-respected non-profit organization known for their expertise in training service dogs. Tuckerman himself underwent comprehensive training to prepare for his role. “I attended a two-week program that taught me how to effectively handle a facility dog. Building a strong partnership with Tuckerman was essential for us to work together successfully in supporting our department and community,” Louie says.?

A Memorable Moment with Tuckerman & Building Trust with the Community

Louie recalls a memorable moment with Tuckerman that highlights his sensitivity and training. “During an interview with a visibly distressed and anxious victim, Tuckerman instinctively positioned himself by their side. When he noticed their tears, he brought over a tissue box. It was a small but meaningful gesture that provided comfort in a difficult time,” she recalls. Moments like these encompass Tuckerman's role and how it extends beyond just being a comforting presence. He actively contributes to the emotional well-being of those around him.

Tuckerman’s approachable demeanor also helps create a connection between law enforcement and the community. “Tuckerman’s calm presence makes it easier for people, especially those who may feel apprehensive or have had negative experiences with law enforcement, to engage with officers,” Louie explains. Whether at community events, schools, or during stressful situations, Tuckerman’s comforting presence helps foster trust and break down barriers between the police and the community they serve.

As National Service Dog Month comes to an end, we want to express our gratitude for the invaluable contributions of service dogs like Tuckerman. Their dedication to supporting their handlers and providing comfort to those in need is truly inspiring. We are proud to have Tuckerman and CSO Louie as part of our team, exemplifying the Pomona Police Department's commitment to accessibility, compassion, and community well-being.
