Celebrating National Nurses Week: Honoring Our Healthcare Heroes and Nominating an Extraordinary Delaware Nurse
As the CEO of SecureNetMD, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless nurses, such as my friend and Thinking About Healthcare podcast host Anne Lara , and witnessing the vital role they play in the #healthcare ecosystem.?
#nationalnursesweek2023 is a time to celebrate these incredible professionals, recognize their contributions, and honor their tireless dedication to patient care.?
In recognition, I’d like to briefly explore the history of National Nurses Week and encourage you to nominate an extraordinary Delaware nurse for the DAISY Award.
National Nurses Week traces its origins back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland, a US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare employee, proposed an official recognition for nurses. While it took several years to gain traction, President Richard Nixon eventually proclaimed a "National Nurse Week" in 1974. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution establishing May 6th as "National Recognition Day for Nurses," and in 1993, the American Nurses Association (ANA) expanded this recognition to a full week, now celebrated annually from May 6th through May 12th.
Today, National Nurses Week is a time for hospitals, clinics, and healthcare providers to show their appreciation for the extraordinary work that nurses do every day. The week is capped off with International Nurses Day on May 12th, which is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
