Celebrating My Role

Celebrating My Role

I celebrated my first Father's Day this year. My wife, Ayfer, made sure to make it extra special. I woke up to my daughter, Isabella, wearing a "Happy Dada's Day!" onesie and a big hug from my 8-month-old princess. She was in charge of helping me open my card and presents as the photographs ensued. A homemade breakfast followed that could be served at a restaurant. And my wife used her best bartending skills to craft me a Bloody Mary as I felt like a king.

My day wasn't done as I was informed we'd be heading to an aquarium for the afternoon. As we moved to Scottsdale just prior to the pandemic hitting, this was our first excursion to any type of entertainment facility in the area. Aside from our local Costco and grocery stores, we haven't done much adventuring into the new normal.

Our temperatures were taken at the door and everyone was required to wear masks inside the facility. The precautions came with comfort as we ventured inside to find a less than packed venue. It was fun to watch the enjoyment and curiosity of Isabella seeing the sharks, penguins and sea creatures.

Pulling down our masks to snap a family photo, I couldn't help but find the strangeness in this moment of fun. But my thoughts passed quickly. It was easy to enjoy the celebration of my first Father's Day.

My daughter means the world to me. I've celebrated each day in my role as her father. While the daily festivities don't include a Father's Day agenda, I revel in my role as Isabella's dad. All it takes is her smile, a hug or story time in her rocking chair. She always finds a way to make each day feel special.

Most people rejoice over a new job or promotion. But how often do we celebrate our on-going position? The roles we have in our life serve a purpose. And our ability to enjoy them and be grateful daily determine our job satisfaction.

While your professional role is much different than your personal one, I encourage you to find a way to celebrate your workday. You may find yourself in a moment of strangeness as many jobs have been altered during the coronavirus era. It is more important than ever to notice your professional responsibilities that you enjoy. Commit these tasks to memory. And undertake these activities with a portion of your everyday. You'll find you are able to do more when you enjoy and celebrate your current role.
