The initialing ceremony marks a significant milestone in the Kitselas Treaty negotiation process, representing over three decades of effort toward self-determination for the Kitselas First Nation
This event is a pivotal step in advancing reconciliation and renewing the nation-to-nation relationships between the Kitselas First Nation, the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
The initialing signifies the conclusion of treaty negotiations and the beginning of the ratification process. The treaty, once ratified by the Kitselas community and approved through federal and provincial legislation, will constitutionally recognize the Kitselas First Nation's rights to governance, land ownership, resource management and socio-economic development.?
This ceremony is not just a formality but a crucial step in restoring the Kitselas people's autonomy and empowering their future.
The process reflects a broader shift in policy towards acknowledging and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, emphasizing a collaborative approach to governance and resource management. It underscores the commitment to righting past wrongs and building a stronger, more inclusive future.
Our team has supported this effort in many facets, including social media, advertisements, event planning, government relations and strategy. We are also heading to the ceremony to provide on-site event management and support.
The ceremony will include key dignitaries and Chief Councillor Glenn Bennett who will speak on the importance of this treaty for the Kitselas community.
