Celebrating Mentorship: Beyond National Mentoring Month
As National Mentoring Month wraps up, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the mentors who’ve made a difference in our lives. While this month has highlighted the importance of mentorship, it’s really something we should celebrate all year round. Mentorship is more than advice or guidance; it’s the people who’ve supported us, challenged us, and helped us grow - often without asking for anything in return.
So, how do we celebrate the mentors who’ve had a lasting impact on us?
It’s about showing gratitude, giving back, and making sure we don’t wait for a designated month to appreciate them.
Here are 10 simple, yet meaningful ways to honor your mentors and keep the spirit of mentorship alive every day:
? Say Thank You
We all need to hear it sometimes—thank you for believing in me. Let your mentor know how much their guidance has meant to you. Whether it’s a short message or a long conversation, make sure they know the difference they’ve made in your life. It can be as simple as, "I’m so grateful for the advice you gave me when I was struggling."
? Just Check In
Life gets busy, but nothing says appreciation like taking the time to connect. Set aside some time just to talk—no agenda, no pressure. Maybe it’s a coffee or a chat after work, but let them know you value their time and enjoy their company beyond just asking for help.
? Help Out Where You Can
Mentors give so much of themselves, so why not offer something back? Whether it’s helping with a project, sharing a helpful resource, or even running an errand, an act of service shows you care and are willing to support them just as they’ve supported you.
? Thoughtful, Meaningful Tokens
A small, thoughtful gift can be a beautiful way to show appreciation. It doesn’t have to be big—maybe it’s a book that reminded you of them, or something personal that connects to a conversation you had. It’s the little things that show you’ve been paying attention.
? Simple Gestures of Thanks
While physical touch may not always be appropriate, a handshake, hug, or even a high-five can be a warm way to show your appreciation. It’s all about expressing gratitude in a genuine, human way.
? Recognize Their Achievements
Mentors don’t always get the recognition they deserve. So when they hit a milestone, whether it’s a big work achievement or something personal, take the time to celebrate them. Send a note, share their win with others, or just give them a heartfelt "Congrats!"

? Share Their Wisdom
Your mentor’s wisdom likely had a big impact on you. Share it! Whether it’s a social media post, a casual mention in a meeting, or just telling others about their influence, it’s a great way to honor what they’ve taught you. It also spreads their knowledge to others.
? Support Their Journey
Mentorship isn’t one-sided. Encourage your mentor to keep growing, too. If you see an opportunity for them, let them know. Recommend them for something you think they’d excel at or just tell them how much you believe in their potential. It’s about paying forward the same encouragement they’ve given you.
? Be There When They Need You
Mentors listen to us, but they need someone to listen to them too. Be that person. Sometimes, just lending an ear and letting them share their thoughts or frustrations can mean a lot. Show them that you’re there to support them, just like they’ve supported you.
? Be a Mentor Yourself
One of the best ways to honor your mentor is to pay it forward. Take what you’ve learned and pass it along to someone else. Whether it’s a colleague, a peer, or even a stranger, sharing your own guidance creates a ripple effect that keeps the mentorship cycle going.
And we close out #NationalMentoringMonth, let's remember that mentorship doesn’t start and end with January. It’s an ongoing relationship that thrives with care, effort, and gratitude.
