Celebrating Mandela Day with Mukuru Cares!

At Mukuru, making a difference is more than a mission—it's our passion. Through Mukuru Cares, our employee volunteering platform, we live our core values and create impact every single day.

As we honour International Nelson Mandela Month, we celebrate the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela and his unwavering commitment to humanity. Since 2009, Mandela Day on 18 July has reminded us all that each person holds the power to transform the world for the better.

This Mandela Day, our Mukuru Cares volunteers stepped up to create lasting, positive change in our communities. This year's theme, "It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity," calls us to action, addressing social injustices and driving sustainable change globally.

Here's how we made a difference:

From crafting warm blankets with the Johannesburg Dream Centre, cooking and sharing a warm meal with the unhoused in inner-city Pretoria, to painting at Emdeni Centre – our Gauteng teams went all out.

Mukuru Cape Town designed activity books for children at Disa Primary School with Common Good, some visited animal welfare organisations and spent time with babies at Bless a Baby.

Our Africa footprint extends beyond, and later this month, Mukuru Malawi will visit and inspire young minds with Building Futures, while our Zimbabwe staff will be spending time and delivering blankets, sanitary towels and cleaning up at Heartwave Foundation.

Mukuru Brand Manager for Corporate Social Investment, Pearl Mphuthi, said, “At Mukuru, social impact is at the heart of our business. We aim to make meaningful contributions to the people we serve. It's inspiring to see our staff volunteering with such enthusiasm, extending their hands to help and show care for their communities. Our commitment doesn't stop on Mandela Day. We run a continuous social impact volunteering programme, allowing our team to make a difference all year round.”
