Celebrating Love: The Timeless Language of the Heart from Radha-Krishna to Valentine’s Day

Almost fifty years have passed since I left India, yet the enduring echoes of its love—expressed through festivals, art, and ancient lore—remain etched in my soul. My journey between East and West has revealed that, regardless of geography or time, love speaks the universal language of the heart—a language as eternal as the cycles of nature and as soulful as a south Indian ragas like Vasantha or Poorvi Kalyani at dusk.

A Rich Tapestry of Love in Indian Culture: The Eternal Language of the Heart

In India, love is not a fleeting whisper but an epic saga, sung by nature and humanity alike, much like a timeless raga, for example Shankarabharanam or Bhairavi that weaves intricate melodies across the expanse of time.

·????? Festivals of Renewal and Devotion

When spring unfurls its vibrant petals, Vasanta Panchami and Saraswati Puja herald the season of renewal, where every bud and note becomes a verse in the language of the heart. These celebrations honor wisdom and the arts, nurturing new beginnings as tenderly as the delicate strains of the raga Hindolam, infusing each moment with grace and gentle passion. Similarly, Holi, with its fiery ritual of Kama Dahanam, burns away old barriers, inviting a raw and transformative passion reminiscent of the uplifting melody of the raga Kedara Gowla or Neelambari.

Imagine a sunrise over a blossoming field, where each flower beats in sync with the soulful notes of Bhoopalam or Bowli, heralding a new melody of hope and love.

As the season transitions, the imagery of these festivals reminds us that nature too participates in the eternal conversation of the heart.

·????? Divine Narratives and Mythic Love

Indian mythology resounds with stories that echo like ancient lullabies of the heart. The courageous tale of Rukmini, who sent her messenger to Krishna to claim her destiny, is a testament to love that defies convention—a melody of resolve and passion echoing the improvisational spirit of a spontaneous raga. Similarly, the tradition of Gandharva Vivaha—ancient love marriages—reminds us that when hearts choose, they compose their own destiny, much like a ragamalika that flows effortlessly from one raga to the next.

Envision an intricate tapestry where every thread is a story of daring passion, woven together like the seamless transitions in a raga that captures the essence of true love.

This divine narrative bridges seamlessly into the artistic expressions that follow, each reinforcing that love is a language without borders.

·????? The Artistry of Love in Music and Dance

The soul of India sings in the lilting strains of both Carnatic and North Indian classical music, and dances in the graceful gestures of Bharatanatyam. Consider a celebrated Bharatanatyam performance, renowned for its emotive portrayal of Sringara Rasa, where every movement is as expressive as the intricate interplay of ragas. Whether it is the ornate improvisations of a Ananda Bhairavi melody or the evocative cadence of a Hindustani rag Sree, every note and every gesture becomes a dialogue in the language of the heart. A rendition of the Jayadeva Asta Padis—such as the evocative “Lalita Lavanga Latha” along with other mystical verses—transcends mere performance, inviting the audience to partake in a timeless conversation of passion and devotion.

Picture a dancer in mid-pose, every gesture an eloquent verse in a visual raga, evoking the soft cadence of Bilahari and the soulful strains of Malkauns that soothe the soul.

As the performance concludes, the echoes of these artistic expressions remind us that art is yet another chapter in the eternal symphony of love.

·????? Textual Legacies of Love

The wisdom of ancient texts continues to illuminate the path of love. The Kama Sutra, authored by Sage Vatsyayana, offers a respectful discourse on intimacy, while Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda elevates the divine romance of Radha and Krishna to celestial heights through its Asta Padis—verses like “Lalita Lavanga Latha” and others that sing the praises of love’s exquisite mystery. These texts are not mere relics of history; they are the timeless lyrics of the heart—comparable to a cherished raga that continues to inspire, console, and whisper secrets of passion across generations.

Visualize an ancient manuscript whose script glows with the soft luminescence of twilight, echoing the profound and stirring strains of a timeless raga.

As these texts guide us, they set the stage for modern expressions of love, linking the past to the present through the enduring language of the heart.

Transition to Modern Expression

Just as these ancient traditions weave together a tapestry of emotion, they also provide the foundation upon which modern expressions of love are built. This seamless dialogue between the past and the present is the very essence of the heart’s language.

The Modern Valentine’s Day: A Contemporary Dialect of the Heart

Valentine’s Day, with its roots in Roman and Christian traditions, now finds its echo in every corner of the world. Yet its celebration in India often feels like a modern dialect attempting to converse with an ancient, soulful language.

·????? Cultural Clashes and Commercial Overtones

For many, Valentine’s Day is a tender moment of personal expression. However, some voices critique it as a commercial veneer that overshadows India’s indigenous expressions of love. I have observed how rampant commercialization can sometimes drown out the soft, soulful whispers of true affection, much like a storm of neon lights overwhelming the gentle strains of a cherished raga.

Picture a bustling market with bright neon signs, where the modern clamor struggles against the serene backdrop of a heartfelt raga playing in the distance.

This contrast serves as a poignant reminder that modern expressions of love, when stripped to their essence, still echo the eternal language of the heart.

·????? Personal Reflections on Modern Love

In my view, true love is measured not by grandiosity but by the simple, sincere gestures that speak directly to the soul. When Valentine’s Day is stripped of its commercial trappings, it transforms into another stanza in the eternal raga of the heart—a moment to reconnect with the purity of affection that has defined our cultural legacy for centuries.

What does authentic love mean to you in today’s fast-paced world? I invite you to reflect and share your thoughts.

Bridging the Old and the New: Reimagining Valentine’s Day as a Celebration of the Heart

The true beauty of love lies in its myriad expressions. The challenge is to allow Valentine’s Day to coexist with our ancient traditions, enriching our cultural repertoire rather than overshadowing it.

·????? Embrace Multiplicity

Love is a polyphony—a blend of diverse voices and melodies. Valentine’s Day can be an additional verse in an age-old song, harmonizing with festivals, art, and myth, much like the harmonious interplay between my favorite ragas Hindolam and Mohanam, and the soulful expressions from both Carnatic and North Indian classical traditions, that enrich every performance.

·????? Celebrate with Heart, Not Hype

Let us peel away the commercial gloss to reveal the core of genuine affection. Whether it’s a handwritten note, a soulful performance, or a quiet moment of introspection, these intimate dialogues of the heart remain untouched by material excess, resonating like the pure, unadulterated strains of a timeless raga.

·????? Cultivate Cultural Dialogues

Community events, workshops, and reflective gatherings can serve as platforms to explore how ancient texts like the Kama Sutra and the Gita Govinda continue to shape our understanding of love. These dialogues weave modern sentiments into the timeless fabric of our heritage, just as every note contributes to the full splendor of a raga.

·????? A Personal Journey of Love

My odyssey—from the vibrant streets of India to the diverse cultures of the world—has taught me that the language of the heart transcends time and space. Whether expressed in the divine whispers of Radha and Krishna or in the modern intimacies of Valentine’s Day, love remains the ultimate poetry of existence—an eternal raga that binds us all.

Honoring the Eternal Language of the Heart

Valentine’s Day need not be a battleground between the old and the new. It can be reimagined as a day to honor the universal, timeless essence of love—a celebration that bridges the sacred and the secular, the ancient and the modern. By embracing both our traditional legacies and contemporary expressions, we create a richer, more inclusive dialogue of the heart.

As I reflect on my own experiences, I am reminded that love is the eternal language that unites us all. Every festival, every dance, every tender moment is a verse in this grand epic of existence—a soulful raga that plays on, note by note, in the chambers of our hearts.

I invite you to share your own stories and reflections on how love has shaped your journey. Let us celebrate love in all its forms, ensuring that this timeless melody continues to resonate, inspire, and embrace us for generations to come.

Thanks for the message about this blog is more flowery and metaphorical than other ones. It was intentionally written that way as I wanted to convey Shringara concept through words and it looks like it tickled your hearts.

19th Ashtapadi Priye charusheele in Raga Vasanthi in Tala Misrachapu is another amazing 8 verses of Krishnadasa Jayadeva. Growing up in bhathi tradition, the raga, tala, words didn’t mean as much as the bhava it evoked in me even as a child. Valentine’s Day is not about the other ( the subject/object of one’s love) but the evocation that one is able to be present to and the Truth-Existence of bliss within

Amazing artistic weaving of words to convey the beyond the world experience. It would surpass all boundaries, if certain words were either never used or replaced with closest words from Indic faith systems. Examples : mythology [lore] , south Indian [ southern Indian ], North Indian [ northern Indian ] Indian [bharatheeya because time context is more closer to Bharat than India ]
