Celebrating Learning at Work Week at DESNZ

By Emma Taylor, Senior Learning and Development Manager in Integrated Corporate Services

Without the key learning, how do people develop and become better at what they do?? It is that time of year again where we remember how learning is always important!? Learning at Work week starts 13th May. This is a national annual event where people focus on their learning. This year’s theme for Learning at Work week is ‘Learning Power’.??

This theme really resonates with me as working in Learning and Development, making sure people within our department get the right learning experiences, at the right time.? We live in a world that changes all the time and keeping up to date is something we all do every day. We learn something new every day without realising it. Think about the technology we have around us to that detour you had to take due to a road being closed, making you learn a new route to where you were going.?

Learning is something that our department takes seriously, making sure people get the training and upskilling that they need to be better at their job. Being in the public sector, it is crucial that our employees have the right learning to be able to be efficient and spend the public’s money wisely.??

The learning offer we have is vast from one off learning online to apprenticeships, which is open to everyone in the department. We work with external suppliers to make sure we get the niche training we require to upskill and become the best as well.? The offer in DESNZ is second to none, with a huge variety of learning including specific learning relating to energy security, carbon capture and achieving net zero.??

For me, being in a position where progressing my career felt like a long way off due to being a parent of young children, the learning available helped me to build my skills so when the time came when my children were older, I could progress my career as I had the right skills. Having done two apprenticeships and numerous other learning courses, these have helped me progress my career.??

Learning gives people the Power to achieve their goals and keep up with everything that is going on around them. We never stop learning, regardless of where we are in our career and I am proud to be working in a department that values and recognises learning’s power.
