Labor Day, also known as "Hari Buruh", is annually celebrated on May 1st.
This public holiday is dedicated to acknowledging the invaluable contributions of workers towards the nation's growth and prosperity.
Officially declared a public holiday by the late Tun Dr. Ismail Abdul Rahman, the then Deputy Prime Minister, on May 20, 1972, at Dewan Belia in Kuala Lumpur.
Labor Day was first observed on May 1st, 1973. This significant declaration not only honored workers' contributions but also aligned Malaysia with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards, emphasizing worker rights globally.
The observance of Labor Day underscores the ongoing importance of advocating for fair labor practices, including fair wages, safe working conditions, and the rights of all workers, including the migrant workforce. It also highlights the necessity for policies that support sustainable business practices and safeguard worker rights amidst economic fluctuations and challenges.
As you enjoyed your day off on Labor Day and participate in the celebrations, let's take a moment to also express gratitude to the workers who enrich our communities. Whether it is the farmers in the fields, the doctors in the hospitals, the teachers in the classrooms, or the construction workers building our cities, every role, irrespective of its size, is crucial.
Let's honor and appreciate all workers, today and every day.
Happy?Labor?Day!
