As we step into July, we have the perfect opportunity to reflect on the vibrant and powerful intersectionality of our identities. June was a celebration of Pride Month, honoring the LGBTQ+ community, and now July brings us Disability Pride Month. These moments remind us of the strength and beauty found in our diverse experiences.
Celebrating Intersectionality
Intersectionality is acknowledging and embracing the various facets of our identities that shape our lives and experiences. For many of us, being Latina is just one piece of our identity but it includes aspects like race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, and more. Each of these identities influences the other, creating a unique and powerful perspective.
The Power of Our Stories
As a Latina with a disability, I understand the importance of sharing our stories and creating spaces where our voices are heard. Our experiences of navigating life with intersecting identities often come with unique challenges, but they also equip us with resilience, empathy, and a deep understanding of what it means to overcome adversity.
The Cultural Value of Pride
In our Latino culture, pride ("orgullo") is a deeply rooted value. We take pride in our heritage, our families, and our traditions. This sense of pride extends to every aspect of our lives, including our diverse identities. Whether we are celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride or Disability Pride, we are honoring our authentic selves and the strength that comes from our unique journeys.
The Importance of Representation
Representation matters. Seeing individuals who reflect our own experiences and identities in positions of influence and visibility helps to validate our journeys and inspires us to reach for our dreams. Not only did I not see Latinos represented in the town I grew up in but I also saw very few people with disabilities represented. The first time I watched an interview of Carson Pickett, a women's soccer player with a limb difference similar to mine, I cried. I was surprised by the tears but it made me feel seen and witnessing her play for the United States women's national soccer team reminded me anything is possible. Growing up with a disability is why I lead from a place of empathy and am a DEIB champion. We must continue to elevate diverse voices and ensure that everyone sees themselves reflected in the world around them.
Powerful Statistics on Intersectionality
1. LGBTQ+ Hispanic Community:
- Around 40% of LGBT adults are people of color, including 22% who identify as Latino. It is estimated that there are over 2 million LGBTQ+ Latinos. This population often faces unique challenges due to the intersection of race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, including higher rates of discrimination and economic disparities.
2. Hispanics with Disabilities:

- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 8.5% of Hispanics in the U.S. have a disability. That's approximately 5.28 million Latinos. This group often encounters barriers to healthcare, education, and employment due to both their disability and ethnic background.
Embracing and Supporting Each Other
In celebrating Pride and Disability Pride, let's commit to supporting each other. This means advocating for inclusivity in our communities, workplaces, and beyond. It means recognizing that our collective strength lies in our diversity and that by lifting each other up, we all rise.
Intersectionality in Action
Here are some ways we can embrace and celebrate our intersectional identities this month:
1. Share Your Story: Whether through social media, blog posts, or conversations with friends and family, sharing your experiences can inspire and empower others.
2. Support Inclusive Initiatives: Advocate for policies and practices that promote inclusivity in your workplace, school, or community.
3. Celebrate Diverse Voices: Amplify the voices of those within our community who may often be marginalized. Listen, learn, and lend your support.
4. Educate and Advocate: Take the time to educate others about the importance of intersectionality and the unique challenges and strengths it brings.
As we honor both Pride Month and Disability Pride Month, let's remember the power of unity. Our diverse identities are a source of strength, and our collective pride as Latinas fuels our drive for equality and acceptance.
Let's continue standing proudly, lifting each other up, and celebrating our diverse identities.
Con mucho orgullo,
Ruby
