Celebrating International Women's Day
Junior Adventures Group AU
Bringing joy, enriching experiences and a sense of belonging to children
On this day, and every day Junior Adventures Group celebrates all women.?
From the inspirational women creating and leading the communities in which we partner, to our talented JAG team who celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive gender parity to help forge a gender equal world every single day – we celebrate you.?
One such inspirational woman is Allisha Parker , our Group Chief Marketing Officer. We asked Allisha why International Women's Day should be celebrated and to give us some insight into her career, leadership, motherhood and juggling it all. This is what she had to say.
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women from a social, economic, cultural and political perspective. A lot has changed since the celebrations began in 1911. It’s important to keep the conversations going as society changes, and the demands on women shift from both a personal and a professional perspective. Without conversation, there will never be a change! It’s important to strike the right balance between empowering women, promoting the social change agenda and education our communities about why equality is important. This doesn’t just relate to women – there is so much opportunity to accept and embrace diversity now, it seems mad not to!?
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?
In a word, absolutely. I can only speak from my personal experience here, and that is to not be afraid to have a voice. The first time can be a little confronting, but the more we can find courage and strength to speak up for ourselves, our views, and our peers the more we can expect to see a structural change in behaviour. I’m in a very fortunate position having worked most of my career in Marketing – a profession with a huge number of great female leaders and role models – so I’ve had the support of a strong network of advocates. Try to surround yourself with people you can start a conversation with. You’d be surprised what a little conversation can do to help steer you in the right direction. Also don’t limit yourself to female mentors. I’ve had leaders both male and female who provide an excellent perspective, and who have been pivotal to my professional development. I guess in short, the way you overcome any barriers based on discrimination (of any kind) is to simply not accept it. If you can stand up on your own, do so. If not, reach out to your network for support.?
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
It was extremely early in my career (I think one of my first roles as an advertising graduate!) and my manager at the time said “You ask a lot of questions. Never stop.” I was initially embarrassed, but then realised what she was telling me – it’s OK to have a view, even if it isn’t’ the same as everybody else. I’ve always been naturally inquisitive. It’s how we learn and grow. I try to impart the same skills to my children – they have the most natural wonder from birth, challenging absolutely everything. It would be nice if they could hold on to that curiosity for life.?
On International Women’s Day what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?
You absolutely CAN. If you start with belief in yourself, you will be able to achieve great things. Whether it be your first marathon, first promotion, first “proper” job. If there is something you would like to achieve in your career, go for it. I often come across young women who fear failure, or don’t believe they have what it takes to achieve something. Instead of starting with why you can’t, make a list of all the reasons why you DO deserve the opportunity, and what would make you great at it! Any gaps you might have can be sorted out once you start. I guarantee there are more reasons why you should than why you shouldn’t! Focus on all that you are capable of.?
Is there anyone that inspires you in your career?
I draw inspiration from a number of places, and from both male and female mentors. In the spirit of IWD though I must call out one group in particular, and that is every single working parent. I’ve been gifted with two beautiful boys and I have to say from graduate roles to executive leadership, the single most challenging (and rewarding) has been my role as a mother. So this is a massive shout out to working parents: you are doing an amazing job, and you are enough!?
If you could have dinner with three inspirational women, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
I think I’d choose my family first. My sister Natalie has always been one of the most inspiring women in my world. She sadly passed away at only 37. Natalie contributed positively in all aspects of her life from her work as a Nephrologist in regional and remote hospitals, to her contribution to the environment and her local community. Natalie loved the Gilmore Girls, so for fun, perhaps Lorelai Gilmore! As a final guest, Princess Diana. I’m sure it would make for some fascinating dinner table conversation!
