Celebrating International Forest Day with KlimaDAO and Carbonmark

Today is #IntlForestDay, which this year is themed around “Forests and Health”.

International #ForestDay is an opportunity to dive into why #ForestsMatter, what they do for us, and what we can do #ForNature to help close the emissions gap over the coming decades.

Closing the emissions gap in the near future is vitally important—and intact #forests offer many additional benefits beyond GHG emissions reductions:

  • mental, physical, and social health improvements;
  • increased biodiversity; and
  • safeguards against erosion and droughts.

Despite these effects, we still don't value our forests highly enough:

  • 15 billion trees are cut down per year;
  • 75% of tropical rainforests cannot recover from major disasters anymore;
  • 10% of global CO2 emissions from 2015 to 2017 were caused by tropical #deforestation.

At least 11% of GHG emissions are attributed to deforestation.

Trees cut down cannot contain the CO2 they once captured, releasing it back into the environment and therefore accelerating #globalwarming.

Protecting this immense natural resource should be one of our top priorities.

Carbon projects around the world are working to restore biodiversity and replenish our forests, and the Digital Carbon Market is being built to funnel resources to these projects more rapidly.

Together with partners including Toucan , C3 , and MOSS.Earth , KlimaDAO supports #ForestsForLife and is striving to enable exponential growth of forestry carbon projects globally.

These are represented by our partners' digital carbon pools: $NCT, $NBO, and $MCO2.

You can contribute to forest preservation through Toucan's $NCT, which pools together projects like the Mai Ndombe REDD+ project in DRC.

It is expected to absorb 175m tCO2e over 30 years, providing co-benefits under the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity standard.

C3’s $NBO provides access to similar projects, including the Pacajai #REDD+ project.

It protects 135,000 hectares of forest at the deforestation frontier in Portel, Brazil, allowing for multiple climate, social, and biodiversity benefits in the process.

Through $MCO2, Moss.Earth is a pioneer of digital carbon in Brazil. Projects like Fortaleza Ituxi REDD absorb 720,000 tCO2e over 30 years, while offering co-benefits like

  • sustainable forest management;
  • training on sustainable cattle raising; and
  • improved labor conditions.

Unrestricted, transparent access to #digitalcarbon enables everyone to participate in the next evolution of carbon markets.

By leveraging the Digital Carbon Market and removing intermediaries, more resources are directed where they belong: carbon projects that reduce emissions.

KlimaDAO and Carbonmark create an open, low-fee infrastructure for #carbonprojects and #carbonmarkets.

Harnessing the technology of our partners, this allows carbon projects to remove obstacles present in traditional carbon markets—and stimulate forestry growth worldwide.
