Celebrating the International Day of Democracy

As we observe the International Day of Democracy on September 15, India shines as the world’s largest democracy, with over 1.4 billion people actively participating in a system that upholds equality, justice, and liberty. The theme for this year’s International Day of Democracy is “Ensuring Effective Governance of AI at all Levels”.

India, world’s largest democracy, under the visionary leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi, has embraced AI as a key pillar of its development strategy, ensuring that it serves the broader goals of democracy and inclusive growth.

Vision for a New India

Since joining office in 2014, PM Shri Narendra Modi has introduced transformative changes aimed at strengthening democracy by enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. His leadership has promoted an environment where every voice matters.

Transformative Reforms Post-2014

Under PM Modi’s guidance, reforms such as the Jan Dhan Yojana and Direct Benefit Transfers have ensured that democracy translates into real economic empowerment for millions. Landmark decisions like GST, Make in India, and the promotion of cooperative federalism have enhanced India’s democratic framework by fostering unity and development across states. MyGov India, the citizen engagement platform, was launched by PM Modi on 26 July 2014, to promote participatory governance and true democracy. Since its launch, MyGov India has been a pivotal citizen engagement platform, designed to enhance the true spirit of democracy by encouraging direct interaction and participation from citizens.

AI and Democracy: India’s Approach

In India, democracy is not just about electoral participation but also about encouraging continuous engagement between the government and its citizens. AI has emerged as a powerful tool in this endeavour, helping to bridge gaps, improve governance, and enhance public service delivery.? The Government of India has recognized the critical role AI can play in transforming governance and ensuring that democratic processes are transparent, accountable, and participatory.

Through initiatives like Digital India, India AI, India Semiconductor Mission and more, India is positioning itself as a global leader in AI, ensuring that technology benefits all sections of society. AI-powered platforms are enhancing citizen engagement, enabling real-time feedback, and improving access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and social welfare schemes.

AI as a Tool for Good Governance

AI’s integration into public service delivery has transformed governance in India. From AI-driven agricultural advisories to predictive healthcare models, AI is enabling more efficient, data-driven decision-making. Platforms like Aarogya Setu and CoWIN, which leveraged AI during the COVID-19 pandemic, are prime examples of how technology can be effectively used to safeguard public health and enhance trust in government systems.

Furthermore, AI is enhancing the electoral process by improving data management, enabling better voter registration, and combating misinformation. This strengthens the democratic process, making it more inclusive and transparent.
