Celebrating International Biodiversity Day: GIZ Indonesia and ASEAN #BePartofthePlan on Protecting Indonesia’s Biodiversity
GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN
We work to shape a future worth living around the world.
Indonesia plays a critical role in global biodiversity conservation due to its status as one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world. Being recognized as one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries, Indonesia is home to 17% of the world's wildlife.
However, habitat degradation and fragmentation, landscape changes, pollution, and climate change are severely threatening this rich and unique biodiversity, also putting many ecosystems at risk.
GIZ Indonesia and ASEAN, through the Resilient Nature Cooperation Area, have been strongly supporting national partners in their efforts for biodiversity conservation. We provide advisory and evidence for effective policies, planning, and management instruments, as well as support the implementation of those strategies in selected ecosystems. ?GIZ's initiatives also aim to establish 10% of Indonesia's marine areas as conservation zones by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving comprehensive area protection targets by 2045. This is also aligned with the development of the Indonesia Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) document.
The upcoming IBSAP that’s going to be published this 2024 will not only demonstrates Indonesia's commitment to protecting its rich biodiversity in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems for future generations but also serves as a strategic guideline for both state and non-state actors. This is in line with the agreed Biodiversity Management Index and the outcomes of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) from the COP 15 CBD in December 2022.
