Celebrating Hispanic Heritage and World Teacher Day

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage and World Teacher Day

As we progress through Hispanic Heritage Month, which spans from September 15 to October 15, I feel an extra wave of gratitude and inspiration to BRAG (Be Real And Grateful) about my Latin roots and the profound sacrifices made by my parents. Like so many, they fled communist Cuba in the early 1980s seeking freedom and a better life in Panama. Although born in Panama, I arrived in the United States as an infant and grew up in Hialeah / Miami Lakes, FL. I became a naturalized citizen at 18, relentlessly pursued the American dream, and have been living it as a full-time social entrepreneur since 2010. My parents' emphasis on education shaped me into a lifelong learner and deeply influences my work, both professionally and philanthropically.

As an inspirational keynote speaker, event facilitator, and emcee, my passion for making an impact goes well beyond the stage. For several years, I've led the volunteer Board of Directors for STARS Global Preparatory, a K-5 non-profit charter school in Kendall, alongside Gabriela Ortega, MBA and Rayza Perez , fellow Latinas driven by the same desire to impact lives in a direct and meaningful way. The school's founding principal, Dr. Egleevelyn Nunez-Sancristobal , shares a similar story, with her family also fleeing Cuba for Venezuela, where she was born.

Thanks to Eglee's leadership and her inspiring team of superheroes, STARS Global Preparatory has become a beacon of hope for many in South Florida, providing specialized support to students from low-income families and those with unique educational needs. Since its inception in 2010, STARS has enriched the lives of over 5,000 students, fostering both their academic and social-emotional growth!

One of the most BRAG-worthy initiatives at STARS is the "Global Village" program (pictured below) which immerses students in real-world problem-solving situations, enhancing their critical thinking and empathy skills, and preparing them to be proactive, compassionate community leaders.

STARS Global Village

This 2024-2025 school year, STARS Global Prep aims to support over 50 families currently facing financial hardships.

Here are three simple ways you can help:

  • VISIT: If you're in South Florida, come see the impact firsthand. Schedule a visit to STARS Global Prep at 15600 SW 88th Street, Miami, FL 33196.
  • DONATE: Every dollar counts. Individual donations fund scholarships and provide critical educational resources for families who can’t otherwise afford them.
  • BRAG: Help create awareness for STARS by sharing this article or tagging a friend who's passionate about children and making a difference in education.

As we approach World Teacher Day on October 5th, let's take a moment to appreciate the incredible teachers who care for and educate our future leaders every day. Celebrate by sharing stories of teachers who have made a difference in your life or the lives of others, alongside your Hispanic heritage stories, I'd love to learn about your Latin roots too!

Thanks for reading and giving me "Permission to BRAG" about this cause that's so close to my heart. Want to learn more or get involved? Contact STARS at [email protected] or call +1 (305) 846-9346. You can make a secure donation online anytime at starsglobalprep.org .
