Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Jordan Rosenthal, Gallopade's Curriculum Training & Support Specialist
Jordan’s family history is a powerful testament to the resilience and perseverance celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month. Her mother immigrated to the U.S. as a child, escaping dictatorship but carrying the rich Cuban traditions that continue to shape Jordan’s life today.
Her abuela, Geraldine, was a remarkable example of strength. She arrived in America without knowing English and worked tirelessly to learn, taking on jobs like cleaning hotels and working as a seamstress, always finding joy in her work. Her resilience continues to inspire Jordan.
As the daughter of a Cuban mother and Jewish father, Jordan has faced challenges in becoming fluent in Spanish, but her abuela’s life motivates her. Every practice deepens her connection to her heritage.
Jordan’s love for her culture shines through family traditions, especially the food. Noche Buena dinners, featuring dishes like lechón asado and plátanos maduros, are a cherished part of her holiday celebrations. Equally treasured are memories of her abuela making Elena Ruz sandwiches after school, accompanied by a batido de trigo, a wheat cereal shake that Jordan fondly describes as “life-changing.”
Jordan’s connection to Hispanic culture is further enriched by her Colombian partner, with whom she frequently spends time in South America, embracing the customs of Colombia. Through food, family, and language, Jordan continues to honor the rich cultural heritage that has shaped her life.
Fun Fact: Jordan’s mother, Maria, is a dual language teacher in South Florida, where she uses Gallopade to teach social studies in Spanish!?
