Celebrating the Growing Role of Pharmacists in Our Localities
Today, as we celebrate World Pharmacist Day, it is important to reflect on pharmacists' crucial role in healthcare, particularly here in Malta. Our country’s healthcare system relies heavily on pharmacists, not only as dispensers of medication but also as trusted advisors who help manage patient care and treatment outcomes.
As a pharmacist, I am proud of how our profession has evolved. Today, we stand as integral healthcare professionals, equipped with expert knowledge to serve as the first point of contact for many patients. We offer guidance not only on over-the-counter (OTC) medications but also in managing complex health queries.
In Malta, trust in pharmacists is remarkably high. A recent study showed that over 91% of the Maltese population view pharmacists as essential healthcare providers.
This trust stems from the accessibility and approachability of pharmacies across the country, with over 200 community pharmacies in Malta and Gozo, ensuring that 90% of the population has a pharmacy within walking distance. This accessibility is especially important for the elderly, who often seek timely medical advice without waiting for a doctor's appointment.
Pharmacists have gone beyond their traditional roles. Over the years, we’ve taken on more responsibilities such as health screenings and providing lifestyle counselling.
This shift has positioned us as key players in preventive care, helping patients manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. We play an essential role in ensuring that treatment plans are followed correctly and assist patients in navigating the complexities of medical advice.
The increasing complexity of healthcare has expanded the role of pharmacists. We are not just dispensers of medication but active participants in patient care. Our knowledge extends beyond pharmaceuticals to include clinical insights that help shape patient care. Whether advising on treatment options, ensuring the safe use of medications, or assisting with chronic disease management, pharmacists complement the work of doctors and other healthcare professionals.
One excellent example of this expanded role is Point of Care (PoC) diagnostics. At Vivian, through our partners Roche Diagnostics and Roche Diabetes, we are empowering pharmacists with the tools to offer diagnostic services directly in pharmacies. This ability to manage diagnostic data at the pharmacy level enhances our role in patient care and allows for a more holistic healthcare experience.
For many in Malta, the local pharmacy is the first stop when faced with a health issue. Pharmacists are often consulted about minor ailments and trusted to offer sound advice on managing these conditions. This approachability reduces the burden on doctors, allowing them to focus more on diagnosis and treatment while pharmacists manage medication and patient education.
Community pharmacists also contribute to environmental health. Many pharmacies now offer services for patients to safely dispose of unused or expired medications, preventing harmful substances from entering the environment. This demonstrates that the work of pharmacists extends beyond patient care to environmental responsibility.
The positive influence pharmacists have on patient outcomes is further supported by studies showing that higher levels of trust in pharmacists lead to better health outcomes. Those who trust their pharmacists are more likely to experience positive results from OTC recommendations and adhere to prescribed medication protocols.
This connection between trust and health outcomes highlights the importance of the pharmacist-patient relationship. While overall health improvements depend on factors such as lifestyle and specialist care, the pharmacist’s contribution to daily healthcare management is undeniable.
As healthcare continues to evolve, so must the role of pharmacists. Our contribution is not static, and we must adapt to the changing needs of patients and the medical landscape.
The introduction of more advanced diagnostic tools, deeper integration into chronic disease management, and ongoing efforts in preventive care are just some ways that pharmacists will continue to provide value.
On this World Pharmacist Day, let us recognise the essential role pharmacists play in healthcare and the positive impact they have on the well-being of the Maltese population.
