Celebrating great women 1.0
Bex Brent - Creative thinker and doer, ex-owner and creative director of Willis York Hairdressing, DJ, Mentor, Ceramic artist and so, so much more. I sometimes wonder whether there is an end to her creativity - Seemly not!
Last month Bex closed the doors of Willis York for all the right reasons and headed north from the capital to pursue new life chapters full of potential. (Cue small violins — we all miss her terribly!)
Bex exited on a seriously high note that went un-reported here in godzone NZ but was slapped all over the press and social across the ditch in Oz. Tall Poppy Syndrome or just plain snobbery -? I say boo to it all — it went un-celebrated so here to fill in the gap is my take on her end of last chapter story.
As one of the nation’s - in fact the planets top colourists L’Oreal invited her to compete in the Australia New Zealand Syle and Colour Competition 2023 - the winner having the chance to compete in the world Grande Finale in Paris. The theme was MetaVerse and Bex came up with some wonderful concepts which saw her win in Sydney. Her winning high bubble was promptly burst when she didn’t make the final cut as one of only six competitors world wide flying to Paris for the Grande Finale — Que Sera, sera, life goes on…Or does it?

A month later and only a week before the l’Oreal Style and Colour Grande Finale in Paris ,Bex received a call to say someone had pulled out and she was now one of the selected six. While the other competitors had had weeks to come up with new concepts and practice, Bex was still concepting as she boarded her flight to Paris. The day after she landed the competition began. Long story short (and you can watch the video), despite all the drama our creative muse found her place to stand, creating an outlandishly beautiful hair style and colour concept that wowed the judges and earned her third place! I can only imagine what would have happened if Bex had those extra weeks to practise!?
I don’t know about you but I think this is something to celebrate! Her achievement is a compete reflection of her stellar talent and star power - the fact that few have heard about this in New Zealand made me realise how many incredible achievements get quietly brushed under the mat — Ordinary New Zealanders doing extraordinary things. People like Bex. So this is me telling you about one amazing individual and her against all odds achievement. I encourage each and everyone of you to celebrate and lift up the people you know doing crazy cool stuff. The world needs to know.
Bex you truly are a rock star human - I, like many others can’t wait to see what you do next! Shine on!
