Celebrating festivals of India: Makar Sankranti!

Makar Sankranti is an Indian festival celebrated by several states of India around mid-January. While this is when all the different states celebrate their harvest festivals, true to India’s diverse traditions, each one has its own customs and practices.

On splitting the term Makar Sankranti, we get Makara which means 'Capricorn'. The movement of the sun into ‘Makara Raashi’ or the ‘zodiac of Capricorn’ is called Makar Sankranti. It has much significance in different parts of India:

  • Families wear traditional clothes, make sweets and pray for peace and prosperity for each other. In the state of Gujarat, it is marked with flying colourful and extra-ordinary kites.?
