Celebrating the end of NATIONAL SURVEYORS WEEK with a NHDOT Employee Spotlight
New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT)
Transportation excellence enhancing the quality of life in New Hampshire.
Jason Pohopek, Chief of Surveys & Mapping, Bureau of Right-of-Way
As the Administrator for our Survey Section, Jason oversees all Land Surveying work performed by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and its hired consultants.?He’s also a team player - since this winter was “all hands-on deck,” the NHDOT benefitted from Jason’s teamwork and commercial driver’s license, having him assist with winter plowing.
He is also a licensed fishing charter captain. Living near NH’s seacoast, he enjoys boating with his family.?He relishes outdoor activities like deep sea fishing and hunting on his days off.
His favorite part about working for NHDOT is the group of people he works with.?He was originally drawn to NHDOT by the positive reviews of the job that were provided by coworkers from the private sector.?A couple of coworkers who had joined the NHDOT Survey Team in the 1990s had told Jason about the surveying opportunities within the department.?Jason describes the staff within the Survey Section as driven individuals who are goal oriented and a pleasure to work with.?“I am truly blessed with the staff that I oversee and am surrounded by,” he says.
Jason enjoys a challenge, and the one he enjoys the most at NHDOT is learning about the history of our highways.?He likes figuring out how to recreate that history from a land surveying perspective.?He’s proud to be part of the team that provides the public with safe travel ways.?His favorite project has been the I-93 Exit 4A Derry-Londonderry #13065.
NHDOT has made him a more diverse and well-rounded surveyor, Jason says.?He has been able to gain knowledge unique of the past survey and mapping practices of the department that helps with survey determination and how they apply to Land Surveying Professional Standards.?A typical day for him requires coordination of all efforts which extend from ground survey to final mapping.?
He advises prospective candidates that there are many different roles within the department with staff promotions.?“If the role that you are hired for is not a fit, then consider one of the many other opportunities that are available to internal candidates.”?The 3 words Jason would use to describe NHDOT is “Best place evah!”
