Today's Google Doodle pays tribute to a remarkable figure in the field of psychology, Dr. Martha E. Bernal, the first woman of Mexican descent to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Dr. Bernal's groundbreaking journey began when she received her doctoral degree from Indiana University in 1962, setting the stage for a career marked by advocacy, research, and substantial contributions to multicultural psychology.

Martha Bernal's graduate experience highlighted the stark underrepresentation of women and minorities in psychology, a challenge that persisted into her professional life. After facing blunt discrimination during her early job searches—receiving responses from academic institutions that blatantly stated, "We do not hire women"—Bernal took a different path. She secured a U.S. Public Health Service Postdoctoral Fellowship and honed her research skills in human psychophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Health Sciences Center.

By 1966, Dr. Bernal was leading groundbreaking research, thanks to a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). She established a laboratory dedicated to studying orienting responses and classical conditioning in autistic children, pioneering work that added valuable insights into the field.

Dr. Bernal’s research trajectory took a pivotal turn in 1979 when she received a National Research Service Award from NIMH to evaluate how psychologists were prepared to work with multicultural populations. Her findings were revealing: APA-accredited clinical psychology programs largely lacked a multicultural curriculum, and there was a noticeable deficiency in the diversity of students and faculty. These insights highlighted significant gaps in the education and training of psychologists, pushing the agenda for inclusivity and diversity in psychological practice.

That same year marked the establishment of the National Hispanic Psychological Association, with Dr. Bernal not only as a founding member but also later serving as its second president. This organization was crucial in advocating for the interests and needs of Hispanic professionals in psychology.

In 1986, Dr. Bernal's academic journey took her to Arizona State University, where she focused her research on the identity development of Mexican-American children and how educational institutions could enhance their training programs to address minority mental health issues effectively.

Dr. Bernal's contributions were widely recognized and celebrated. In 2000, she was honored at the Latino Psychology Conference for her extensive contributions to Latino psychologists. Furthermore, in 2001, the American Psychological Association’s Public Interest Directorate awarded her the 2001 Contributions to Psychology Award, a testament to her lifelong dedication to enhancing the field of psychology through a multicultural and inclusive lens.

Dr. Martha E. Bernal's legacy is a beacon for all in the psychological community, reminding us of the importance of diversity, the power of resilience, and the impact one individual can have on paving the way for future generations. As we celebrate her life and achievements today with a Google Doodle, let us remember her enduring contributions that continue to influence the field of psychology across the globe.
