As a group of disabled individuals, embracing diverse cultural practices has always been essential to us. This week, we were thrilled to be part of the Diwali celebrations—a time of light, hope, and renewed positivity for the future. Diwali, often called the "Festival of Lights," is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, though it is widely celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists as well. Its joyful atmosphere reminds us of the beauty of shared experiences and the powerful message of resilience that Diwali represents.
What is Diwali? ??? Diwali is a festival that symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Traditionally, Diwali lasts five days and is filled with vibrant decorations, twinkling lights, prayers, and family gatherings. Each day has its own rituals, from honouring the goddess Lakshmi to celebrating personal and communal victories. For many, Diwali signifies new beginnings, a fresh start, and the pursuit of peace and prosperity.
In Hinduism, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after a fourteen-year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. Homes are illuminated with clay lamps (diyas) and candles, symbolising the light that guides us through challenges and illuminates our lives. For Sikhs, Diwali coincides with the release of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, from imprisonment, symbolising freedom and the pursuit of justice. Similarly, Jains commemorate Diwali as the day Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment. This diversity of celebrations across traditions is a beautiful reminder of the universal values Diwali embodies.
A Conversation with Jiten ???? Yesterday, I had a wonderful conversation with Jiten, one of our community members. Jiten has had a stroke, but his energy and wisdom shine through in everything he shares. He told me about why Diwali is so important to him, and his words filled me with insight that I hadn’t realised I needed. Jiten explained that Diwali brings light and warmth into his life, especially after the challenges he has faced. For him, Diwali represents resilience, a reminder to appreciate what we have and to continue moving forward, no matter the obstacles. The knowledge he shared was invaluable and gave me a whole new perspective on the depth and beauty of Diwali.
Embracing Cultural Diversity ???? Being part of the Diwali celebrations was both inspiring and enlightening for us. We learned about the unique ways people celebrate this time, from lighting up their homes to preparing special foods, engaging in music, and exchanging gifts. Observing these practices sparked deep reflections within us about our own journeys, triumphs, and shared connections.
As disabled people, we know what it means to overcome obstacles, strive for knowledge, and search for light even in the hardest of times. Diwali resonates deeply with our experiences, highlighting the values of resilience, perseverance, and the constant pursuit of a brighter future. While each of us has our own story, it’s these shared values that help connect us to the wider community and its traditions.
Celebrating Diwali reminded us that our differences do not divide us; instead, they offer each of us a unique perspective on life, strength, and the importance of unity. In embracing Diwali, we stand in solidarity with everyone who celebrates it, as well as others who honour different cultural and religious practices throughout the year. These occasions are opportunities to learn from one another, connect through shared values, and foster an inclusive, compassionate world.

Diwali’s Message of Hope and Solidarity ???? In the spirit of Diwali, we want to extend a message of hope and unity to all our friends, family, and kin. The festival reminds us to find light in the hardest of times and hope in the most challenging of circumstances. Diwali’s message encourages us to spread kindness and positivity as we move forward in life. It serves as a reminder that no matter where we are from or what we believe in, we all seek hope, peace, and happiness.
This Diwali, may we all embrace light, share love, and kindle hope for a brighter future. As the diyas illuminate homes and hearts, let us continue to support one another and celebrate the diversity that enriches our lives.
“Lead us from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.” — Diwali mantra from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
So, as we celebrate Diwali and other cultural practices, let’s remain open-hearted and curious, always striving to understand and honour the many traditions that make our world a colourful, compassionate place. From all of us: Happy Diwali! ??????
