Celebrating Dads
If you could time travel back to the early 20th century, you’d find that Father’s Day was first conceptualized then but didn’t immediately catch on. Initially, it was seen as too sentimental, an attempt to “domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving.” It took many years of persistence and an eventual Presidential recognition to make it the special day we now celebrate on the third Sunday of June.
We are glad that both fathers and society have evolved beyond the scoffing and disdain to honor our fathers and father figures. As mothers, we are especially proud of your character, leadership, and fierce sense of responsibility. Whether you’re tossing the ball in the backyard with the kids or helping them with their homework, we know you're creating strong emotional bonds. You teach them the importance of values, behavior, work ethic, and integrity.?
It is also true that we get frustrated with your couch coaching during football, basketball, baseball, cricket, pickleball and pretty much any sport. We’re exasperated by how much “work” takes time away from family, regardless of weekdays or weekends. And the weekend 15 mile runs seem never-ending, often at the cost of chores and errands.
But we see the big picture. We understand your natural affinity for sports reflects your competitive side. We know the running escapades are your “me” time to refresh and recharge. We think that your work obsession stems from your innate drive to be the protector and provider.
We appreciate that you extend yourself as a partner, a playmate to your kids, and a mentor and guide for all. Your ability to connect on a deeper level, your strength in silence, and your quiet dedication are worth emulating. We look up to you, are inspired by you, and thank you for everything you do every day.
Whether you're grilling in the backyard, watching a game, or enjoying a quiet dinner with your family today, know that the Dad jokes are still going strong.
