Celebrating Conservation: BC Parks Foundation Protects Over 250 Acres in the Salish Sea

BC Parks Foundation has successfully preserved more than 250 acres of land in the Salish Sea.

This remarkable achievement marks a significant step forward to protect and sustain British Columbia's natural beauty and biodiversity.?

"This is about British Columbians coming together to keep BC beautiful. By protecting these valuable places now, people and wildlife can enjoy them forever." - Andy Day, CEO of the BC Parks Foundation.

The Salish Sea

The Salish Sea stretches from north of Vancouver, Canada, to south of Seattle, Washington. It is one of the world's largest and most biologically diverse inland seas and is home to several ecosystems that need to be protected. This includes the coastal Douglas fir ecosystem, old-growth forests, wetlands, grasslands and kelp forests.?

Successfully Protected Areas

These new protected areas include:?

?? Secret Cove: an undeveloped northern shoreline, mostly comprised of important biodiverse second-growth Douglas-fir with scattered magnificent old growth.

?? Jeddah Point: 85 acres of an untouched coastal landmark.

?? Deep Bay: The 84-acre oceanfront parcel?connecting other already-protected areas.

?? Marine Island: A 10-acre island in the Moist Maritime Coastal Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone.?

?? Salt Spring Island: Protecting 40 acres of shoreline and rare Douglas-fir forest.

Voices for the Islands

Sheila Harrington , a long-time conservationist on B.C.'s west coast has a new book highlighting the importance of protecting the Salish Sea. The book's chapters are divided by island, showcasing the distinct stories each one has to tell.

?

Sheila travelled by boat to 17 islands in the Salish Sea to interview more than 50 fellow conservationists about efforts to preserve habitats in the area. She also met some of the youth who are continuing that work.

"And many of the older people I interviewed, when I asked them, what hope do you have for the future? Do you have hope for the future? Almost all of them said their hope was in the young people." - Sheila Harrington, local author and conservationist.

We believe that by teaching kids young when they get older they know how to take care of the ocean. Sea Smart is dedicated to educating and empowering youth through engaging programs including school workshops, summer camps, online courses, and shoreline cleanups.

Encourage your child to learn more about the Salish Sea, enroll in our Orcas in the Salish Sea course for free! This program teaches youth how to become effective environmental stewards and make a real difference in protecting our ocean.
