Today marks Children's Day in Thailand, a special occasion that brings joy and laughter to children across the nation. For many of us, it’s also a time to reflect on our own childhood—a period when life was simpler and purer. I find myself looking at old photos from those early days, reminders of a time when we were truly ourselves—na?ve, untainted, and unburdened by the complexities of the world.
However, as we grow, the innocence of childhood begins to fade. Society, capitalism, and the people around us subtly but steadily shape us into someone we may not always recognize. We’re taught to fit in, to conform, and to succeed by standards set by others. In this process, the essence of who we are can get lost.
Living authentically in a world that often pushes us to be otherwise is no small feat. Yet, it is essential for our happiness and well-being. Here are some ways I believe can help us reconnect with our true selves:
1. Embrace Self-Reflection
Take time to reflect on what truly matters to you. Journaling, meditating, or simply sitting in silence can help you reconnect with your inner thoughts and values.
2. Limit External Influences
Social media and societal pressures can distort our sense of self. Create boundaries to reduce their impact and focus on what genuinely resonates with you.
3. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Choose friends and communities that encourage authenticity. Being with people who accept you for who you are can empower you to stay true to yourself.
4. Remember Your Childhood Self
Think back to your younger years. What brought you joy? What dreams did you have before external expectations took over? These memories can guide you toward rediscovering your authentic self.
5. Pursue What Feels Right
Life may demand compromises, but it’s important to carve out spaces where you can be unapologetically yourself. Whether through hobbies, work, or relationships, prioritize what aligns with your values.
Children's Day reminds us of the beauty of our untainted selves. While the world around us inevitably shapes who we become, staying true to ourselves is a journey worth taking. Through self-reflection, setting boundaries, and reconnecting with our childhood innocence, we can live a life that feels genuine and fulfilling.
As we celebrate the purity and joy of children today, let us also honor the child within ourselves—a beacon of our truest, most authentic self.
Happy Thai Children's Day!
