Celebrating Black Music Month: Honoring the Legacy and Influence of Black American Music
Key Takeaways:
June is Black Music Month, a time to reflect on and celebrate the profound musical talent of Black Americans that has long been an essential part of the history of American music. Established by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, the month honors the contributions of Black musicians, composers and performers in shaping the cultural landscape of our nation.
The influence of Black American music is deeply rooted in the history and soul of our country. From the field songs of formerly enslaved Africans to the emergence of jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, hip-hop and more, Black music has been a powerful force in shaping American culture and identity. It’s a testament to the resilience, creativity and the unbreakable spirit of a people who, despite facing tremendous adversity, have continuously transformed their experiences into art that resonates across generations.
More Than Entertainment: A Deep Artistic Expression Woven into the Heritage of Black Americans
Music is more than entertainment — it is a vital thread that weaves together the fabric of Black American heritage. It has been a source of comfort and strength during times of struggle, a means of expression and empowerment and a conduit for community and connection.
Through music, Black Americans have told their stories, shared their joys and sorrows and asserted their presence in a society that has often sought to marginalize them. As Stevie Wonder once powerfully said, “Music, at its essence, is what gives us memories.”
Black American Music and Juneteenth
Amidst Black Music Month we celebrate Juneteenth, a day which commemorates the emancipation of formerly enslaved Black Americans in Confederate territories. The day also offers us another opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Black Music while reflecting on the continued struggle for equality.
Music plays a central role in Juneteenth celebrations, recalling and symbolizing the triumphs and hardships faced by Black Americans over generations. From soulful gospel songs that uplifted spirits during the darkest days before freedom to the vibrant rhythms of jazz and blues that gave voice to the Black experience during the Great Migration, music has always been an outlet and mode of expression. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and creativity of Black Americans that has driven the fight for freedom and justice.

The cultural impact of Black music spans generations and continues to influence contemporary music genres, inspiring artists worldwide. Hip-hop, born from the streets of the Bronx, has become a global phenomenon, influencing fashion, language and social movements. The innovation and creativity found in Black music are a testament to the ongoing contributions of Black artists to the cultural tapestry of our nation and our world.
Supporting the Initiatives and Artists That Preserve and Create Black Music
As we celebrate Black Music Month, it is critical to acknowledge and celebrate the places that provided a haven for Black Americans to speak, perform and showcase their talents to wider audiences. Carnegie Hall ll in New York City is one such place. In an era when Black Americans were not welcome in many historic venues, Carnegie Hall elevated Black voices. This includes singers like Marian Anderson, Benny Goodman and Sissieretta Jones, the first Black American artist to perform at Carnegie Hall. Civil rights activists like Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois were also given a platform to address Carnegie audiences. As Chairman of Carnegie Hall, I am incredibly proud of this history.
It is also important to support the institutions and initiatives that preserve and promote Black musical heritage. Organizations like the National Museum of African American Music , the Sphinx Organization and the Louis Armstrong House Museum & Archives play a crucial role in honoring the legacy of Black music and ensuring that future generations have access to its rich history.
Moreover, supporting Black artists and musicians today is vital for the continued growth and evolution of Black music. By providing platforms for emerging talent, investing in music education and promoting diversity in the music industry, we can help sustain the vibrancy and innovation that black music brings to our culture.

9 个月Indeed the South Bronx birthed HIp Hop and all of its off shoots: b boys, scratchin, graffiti, street wear, Zulu nation-Zulu beats. Olympic stadiums will now witness competing teams from all over the world who have modeled themselves after these youngsters, like my brothers , who spun on their heads on cardboard boxes in front our stoop on 156th st. Sadly most of those pioneers are still in the hood struggling. We need to finance a fund, retirement package or a stipend for these innovative courageous young folk who chose break dancing over beating each other up. Let’s acknowledge their value to the world.
