Celebrating Black History Month 2024
The past is always present. Even when people in power try to erase it. #BlackHistoryMonth
Last year, our Board and many MacArthur Staff members journeyed to Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, AL. It is a profoundly moving pilgrimage.
EJI was founded by #MacFellow Bryan Stevenson to create justice, to act upon this history and make it known. Over the past few years, nearly all MacArthur Staff have made a similar trip--we aspire to make this pilgrimage a shared cultural experience for our team. And many of us have traveled to visit EJI and their team through partnership efforts, including the Democracy Frontlines Fund and a seminar in support of HBCU scholars in applying for fellowships.
We are reminded through these visits to Montgomery: “Thousands of African Americans are unknown victims of racial terror lynchings whose deaths cannot be documented, many whose names will never be known. They are all honored here.”
We can honor them by seeking justice and continuing to work toward racial equity.
