Celebrating Black Business Month: Honoring Legacies and Driving Equity

As we step into August, we embrace a time of celebration, appreciation, and empowerment. Black Business Month is here, and it is a moment to acknowledge and support the significant contributions of black-owned businesses to our society.?

Black entrepreneurship runs deep in my veins. My paternal grandparents (who raised me) were proud grocery store owners, and their store was a beloved staple in the Orlando community for 20 years. They provided essential goods and served as role models for the younger generation. Their determination and resilience in the face of challenges inspire me today.

I am proud to say that the legacy of black entrepreneurship extends beyond my grandparents. Several relatives have also ventured into entrepreneurship, leaving their mark in their respective fields. Their stories of triumphs and struggles fuel my passion for supporting black-owned businesses.

That said, I am thrilled to shed light on the importance of Black Business Month and how we can show our support this month and beyond.

The History of Black Business Month

Black Business Month originated in 2004 when engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton, the president of eAccess Corp, joined forces. Their goal was to empower black business owners nationwide and address the challenges faced by minority entrepreneurs. Frederick's personal experiences in building his company in San Francisco in 1969 fueled this initiative.

The Significance of Black Business Month

?Denise Moore, CEO of the Black Business Alliance in Peoria, Illinois, captures the essence of Black Business Month when she states, "Black Business Month is exciting because it gives us an opportunity to focus on a community that is far too often underrepresented when it comes to access to capital and opportunities to build wealth."?

A Legacy of Entrepreneurship

The history of black-owned businesses in the United States dates back to the late 1700s when both free and enslaved Black individuals began establishing their own small businesses, defying the odds of a deeply segregated society. From barbershops to tobacco shops and shoemaking, these early entrepreneurs laid the foundation for the thriving community of black-owned enterprises we have today.

The Golden Age and Beyond

The period between 1900 and 1930 is often called the 'golden age' of Black-owned businesses, marked by the growth of establishments and districts like Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The establishment of The National Negro Business League in 1915 provided widespread support for African-American entrepreneurship, spreading its influence to over 34 states.

The Current Landscape

Today, black-owned businesses play a vital role in the nation's economy, with approximately 10% of all American businesses being black-owned. Moreover, black business owners account for around 30% of minority-owned businesses. Black businesses are on the rise in the U.S. Notably, Washington D.C. boasts the highest ratio of black-owned businesses, a remarkable 28%.

Supporting Black-Owned Businesses

?This month and beyond, we have an opportunity to support and uplift black-owned businesses. Here are some practical ways to get involved:

1?? Shop Local:?Seek out and frequent black-owned businesses in your community. By doing so, you contribute directly to the growth and success of these enterprises.

2?? Spread the Word:?Use your platform to share and promote black-owned businesses and amplify their voices.

3?? Collaborate:?Explore partnerships and collaborations with black-owned businesses to foster mutual growth and create lasting impact.

4?? Financial Support:?Consider investing in or financially supporting black-owned businesses through crowdfunding platforms or venture capital firms focused on diversity.

5?? Mentorship:?Offer mentorship and guidance to aspiring black entrepreneurs, sharing your knowledge and experience to empower them on their journey.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate Black Business Month, let us honor the legacies of black entrepreneurs who have paved the way for current and future generations. We can work towards a more equitable and prosperous business landscape for all by championing diversity and inclusion. Together, let's celebrate black-owned businesses' resilience, creativity, and achievements this month and every month.

Let's support black-owned businesses and drive positive change!
