Celebrating The Bill Of Rights
The “Bill of Rights Day” celebrated on December 15, is a day that is often overlooked because it happens to be wedged between two major holidays. The Bill of Rights is one of those essential things which make up part of the foundation of the United States. Without this collection of rights, our country would look radically different than it looks today. More than anything else, these rights give us the personal freedoms which we often take for granted.
?In this article, we’d like to make our contribution toward the celebration of our personal freedoms and rights as U.S. citizens. We will highlight the Bill of Rights, our freedoms and rights, and then discuss how Americans can best celebrate these freedoms and rights.
?The Bill of Rights: 10 Amendments
?The Bill of Rights consists of the first 10 amendments of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Constitution provides a blueprint for our government and society. But the original Constitution didn’t include everything which our founders believed was essential for a healthy society. So, they quickly added 10 amendments, or changes, to make the Constitution complete. These 10 amendments contain freedoms and privileges which we view as absolutely necessary for the operation of a free and just society. For instance, the first amendment provides several important freedoms, such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. The second amendment – an amendment that hasn’t been without controversy – is the right to bear arms. The fifth amendment is the right to protect oneself from self-incrimination (i.e. the right to “plead the fifth”).
An amendment to the U.S. Constitution can actually be repealed or overturned by another amendment. This has happened before in American history. For instance, the eighteenth amendment prohibited the sale or consumption of alcohol, but the twenty-first amendment then repealed the prohibition. The Bill of Rights is considered almost a sacred collection of rights, and so overturning one of these amendments is not likely to happen. The second amendment has been debated, especially in recent years, but there is still a low chance of it being overturned.
