Celebrating the Beauty around the Burke

Celebrating the Beauty around the Burke

In her blog Nina Simon claims that visitors seek for a new experience in the museum. They are happy to build bridges across their  differences and create a stronger culture.

The exhibition Pacific Voices - Worlds within our community, in Burke museum in Seattle is a celebration for life lovers.

Campers and counselors choose to celebrate the beauty around the exhibition. The session  took place at noon time when campers were familiar with the artifacts and the hidden objects in the drawers  - an original idea to let children touch and play with replicas.

I was curious to hear their sympathetic aesthetic response to the  and feel its beauty.

Culture and art were the mature answer that left me speechless.

I felt that campers are ready to express their personal interpretation to “BEAUTY”

It was nice to see that in three minutes campers spread around the exhibition and focused on their chosen object and drew its BEAUTY.

A floral vase from the Korean wedding exhibition, a wooden seal, a model for a ship and a net with a golden fish were examined from various points of view and perspectives.

Dana, 11 years old

"I like this because I chose this painting ( A boat model) because you have people trying to go from one place to another .The reason I like this is because I love traveling and seeing this was really something I enjoyed."

Lorry,11 years old

"It looks like it has the head of a bear and the body of a seal."

Karen, 9 years old

"I like the gold fish because it reminds me of my pet goldfish."

Deighton,10 years old

"The beauty that I like about it is that the  flowers and i like the vase and the table."

Cara,10 years old.

"The beauty that I see in the tree house is really that I like it because it is pretty and I like

the wood. I see it’s overall beauty and especially the wood"

We summarized our celebration with a short presentation where campers shared the reason that they chose the objects.

My conclusions from the activity

  1. There are several layers that we can discover in the exhibition.
  2. Children connect easily with objects that remind them their personal experiences.
  3. Had we used a digital platform, we would be able to keep and relate to visitors ideas and CELEBRATE their creativity.
