Celebrating 50 Years of Freedom and Democracy
This week, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of 25 April 1974.?This milestone represents a pivotal moment in Portuguese history—a moment?that signifies not just the end of dictatorship and?repression,?but the dawn of a new era marked by freedom, democracy, and equality for all citizens.
In the classroom, students learn about?historic?dates by delving into the underlying realities that led to them. In their history classes, students explored the meaning of deprivation of liberty, the perils of living in a repressive state, the stifling effects of censorship, and the absence of civil rights and democracy. Through biographies, music, and banned texts, they gained insight into what it truly means to lack a voice or the right to express opinions. Understanding these concepts is crucial before delving into the significance of 25 April. It's about more than just a single day; it's about a journey from oppression to liberation.
This year, our celebrations are more poignant than ever as we honour the values of April amidst a still divided and intolerant world. It's a reminder that the fight for freedom and democracy is ongoing—it's not just about the past 50?years,?but about striving for another 50.
During this special week, we've?had the privilege of hosting?the 25 April Association, where students heard firsthand about this day and revolution.?We engaged in multiple activities with the participation of the whole school to remember the values of April, including art projects, reciting poems, singing the songs of April, study visits, and even creating a human Portuguese flag together.
Let's celebrate the progress of the past 50 years while reaffirming our commitment to the values of April.?Together,?let's strive for a future where freedom, democracy, and equality prevail.?Cheers to 50 years of freedom, with the determination to keep fighting for another 50!
