Celebrating 50: Fifty Lessons from Life, Business & Legacy

As I approach the milestone of my 50th birthday (Yes, I still cannot believe I am turning 50), I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped my life. It seems like only yesterday when I graduated from university in 1996 and started my first job in a brand experience agency. Who would have thought that since then, I would go on to write 9 books, travel to 37 countries, work with over 1000 brands, open up a brand consulting agency and a corporate training/speaking business, and be recognised as a global brand thought leader, ranked No. 2 in the world. ?

I find myself pausing and reflecting on these 5 decades of experiences that have enriched my journey thus far. Life has a way of teaching us, sometimes gently, at other times with more vigour, but always leaving an indelible mark. Over the years, I've accumulated lessons – some through joy, others through challenges, but all invaluable. Today, as I stand at this significant juncture, I wish to share with you, my cherished clients and network, a compilation of these lessons. Grouped under three pillars – Life, Business, and Legacy – these are insights I've gleaned from half a century of living, falling, growing, and leading.

Life

1. Friends will come and go throughout your life. That’s ok. You have friends for a reason, friends for a season, and friends for a lifetime.
2. Embrace life's ups and downs; they shape who you become.
3. After a near-death experience, life's value became clear. Cherish every moment, and embrace life's fragility with gratitude. Every day is a gift worth celebrating.
4. Every disagreement is an opportunity to understand, not to win.
5. Make peace with your past so it won’t affect the present.
6. Be relentless in chasing your passions.
7. Find joy within, not outside.
8. Miracles happen when you least expect them.
9. Everyone has their battles; empathy goes a long way.
10. Better days always lie ahead.
11. Age brings clarity about who truly matters in your life.
12. Children teach us as much as we teach them.
13. Continuous learning keeps the mind sharp and the spirit adventurous.
14. Your path is uniquely yours; embrace it.
15. Intelligence takes many forms; cherish them all.
16. Seek the deeper meaning in everything.
17. Accept imperfection; it's part of being human.
18. Compassion is strength, not weakness.
19. Choose your responses, don't let them be dictated by others.

Business

1. Build a team or business support group that complements your strengths.
2. Investing in the next generation is the true mark of leadership. Keep teaching and keep giving always.
3. "Why” is more important than “how”. Context is king.
4. Believe in yourself, even when others doubt you.
5. Success is personal; define it on your terms.
6. Find Mentors and Coaches that will help you raise your game.
7. Networking isn't just about contacts, it's about genuine connections.
8. Cultivate a growth mindset. Keep asking yourself how you can do it better. Keep raising your game and sharpening the saw!
9. Always strive for excellence, not just perfection.
10. Your personal brand's essence (purpose/values) drives who you are; create it and stay true to it.
11. Every interaction is an opportunity to create a lasting impression for your personal brand.
12. Leadership is about purpose, influence, and servitude and not just authority.
13. Foster meaningful relationships in business; they're invaluable.
14. Show the world your expertise, don't just tell them.
15. ?Celebrate success with those who've been part of the journey.
16. Regardless of what others do to us, we still choose who we are and how we respond.
17. Every employee, irrespective of rank, brings value. Treat them as your most valuable asset.
18. Stay humble in success and optimistic in failure.
19. Keep Embracing Change. Do not Fear it. Find opportunities in it.
20. Your customers are everything. Treat them well.
21. Cultivate resilience in business; challenges are inevitable. When setbacks occur, learn from them and rise stronger.

Legacy

1. Your legacy is built on the lives you've touched.
2. Giving back creates a ripple effect that lasts generations.
3. Inspire others not just with words, but with actions.
4. Love your Family more than anything else in the world.
5. Stand up for causes bigger than yourself.
6. Legacy isn't just about remembrance, it's about impact.
7. Teach the next generation the value of integrity and character.
8. Your experiences, stories and lessons are a treasure trove for future generations.
9. Legacy is about planting seeds in gardens you may never see bloom.
10. A meaningful legacy is built on love, wisdom, service and GOD.

Reaching the age of 50 is not just about the years gone by but about the wealth of experiences, the tapestry of memories, and the wisdom garnered along the way. These 50 lessons are my reflections, a distillation of moments and milestones from my journey. In sharing them, my hope is that they resonate with you, spark introspection, or simply offer a fresh perspective. To all who have been a part of my 50-year journey, thank you.
