Celebrating 442 new jobs in UTS Startups last year

We've built the largest community of startups in Australia and the largest program to inspire new tech entrepreneurs in schools, the community and at UTS, but this is a marathon, not a sprint. We're taking a second to take a breath and share some #wins.

Along with the 442 paid jobs our startups reported creating last year, they worked with 952 UTS students through internships and in-subject projects, providing real-world learning opportunities.

97% of our startup founders reported valuable learning experiences from their pursuit, with the most common self-reported learnings being perseverance, adapting to change, prioritisation, self-discipline and open-mindedness.

We are now at a point where 8.8% of UTS students report currently developing or operating their own startup, according to a question we snuck into the 2021 Student Satisfaction Survey.

UTS Startups is currently supporting 495 startups launched by current and past UTS students free of charge and without equity requirements, but we do ask each member to help us to help less experienced entrepreneurs, and to help us inspire the next generation, creating an exceptional startup peer support and inspiration engine.

UTS Startups @ School will visit 50 schools each year and address 10,000 year 9 and 10 students, free of charge, thanks to the support of Sam Hordern, Ajay Bhatia, Kee Wong and our community of startup founders.

Each entrepreneur gets training and experience in speaking convincingly to diverse audiences, and year 9 and 10 students get to see someone like them, doing something they can do, and getting the results they want to get.

After launching in February, we’ve so far addressed 568 year 9 and 10 students in workshops. I'm also deeply honoured and excited to be working with the incredible Aaron Ngan , who will be leading this program going forward.

UTS Startups @ Central opened in January on the busiest street corner in Sydney (Harris and Broadway in Ultimo), with support from City of Sydney, showing the public not just the products and services of our startups but the stories behind them as well.

Polished two minute startup pitches are wonderful, but people need unvarnished entrepreneurial stories from people like themselves to really understand how to take their first steps.

Three months in, we've just broken through 10,000 views of the real stories behind these startups .

57% of incoming UTS students in 2021 reported wanting to pursue entrepreneurship, and I’m deeply proud that UTS has the desire and capability to not just support this desire, but to build a virtuous cycle of peer learning and inspiration at scale to ensure this number continues to rise, and converts into growing employment and learning outcomes as well.

Thinking about a startup?

Join us at UTS Startups @ Central each Friday at 3:30pm to hear a new UTS Startups Confessions interview, followed by free food and startup networking with great startup founders from 4:30pm.

Already have a startup?

Need some quick inspiration?

As much as I love our collective #wins, the real wins that matter are those of our founders, which you can hear in some of our UTS Startups Confessions videos :

So great to see Murray. Your work is making such a contribution to critical building of skills, jobs and ultimately growth in the economy. WE need more people to know about it.

Well done Murray

Nice work, and a very positive read. I know there are so many great ideas, especially at Uni and it sounds like some of those are becoming real start ups. I’d be really interested to find out what role crowdfunding may of played on the startup journey?
