Celebrating 30 Years of Positive Impact: World Ecolabel Day 2024

World Ecolabel Day is extra special this year as we mark a significant milestone: 30 years of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) driving positive environmental change through lifecycle ecolabels.

GEN has been at the forefront of advancing sustainability for three decades by supporting verified, trustworthy ecolabels. These ecolabels enable consumers and businesses to make informed, responsible choices that benefit people and the planet.

A Proven Legacy of Trust and Influence

Founded in 1994, GEN has grown from 14 pioneering members to representing over 50 countries worldwide. Ecolabels have shaped markets and influenced consumer behaviour, demonstrating the power of environmental certification in fostering sustainable procurement and reducing ecological footprints.

The Next Chapter: Shaping the Future of Ecolabels

As we celebrate the accomplishments of GEN members over the past 30 years, we're also looking to the future. The challenges facing our world today, from climate change to biodiversity loss, require even more innovative and collaborative solutions. Ecolabels will continue to play a critical role in this journey by maintaining integrity and pushing for even higher sustainability standards in global markets.

At GECA, we're passionate about continuous improvement - not just for others but for ourselves. The future of our lifecycle ecolabel standards will be to further embrace harmonisation across core criteria and quantitative-based indicators for areas such as carbon, circular economy, materials health, biodiversity and transparency. In addition to enhancing our existing standards, we are open to developing new standards that encourage and reward best practices across environmental, human health and social impact hotspots.
