Celebrating 200 Years of Compassion at Hull Trinity Church: A Tribute to the RSPCA and Animal Welfare Charities
RSPCA Hull and East Riding Branch CIO
We specialise in rehabilitating/re-homing vulnerable animals that are victims of cruelty, abuse, abandonment & neglect.
This past Sunday, Hull Trinity Church hosted a heartwarming service that brought together people from across the community to celebrate animals and the remarkable work of the RSPCA Hull and East Riding Branch CIO and other animal charities. The event was a resounding success, with wonderful support from local animal welfare organisations and members of the public, all united in a shared mission: to protect and care for the creatures who share our world.
A Legacy of Kindness Rooted in Hull
It was fitting that this commemoration took place in Hull, a city whose legacy is intertwined with the founding values of the RSPCA . William Wilberforce, one of Hull’s most notable figures, is known worldwide for his tireless work to end the transatlantic slave trade. Yet, his compassion extended beyond human suffering—Wilberforce’s Christian faith led him to advocate for the welfare of animals, laying the foundation for the establishment of the RSPCA 200 years ago, in 1824.
The service also honoured Sidney Colman, the first manager of Hull’s RSPCA centre, whose heroism during the Hull Blitz earned him the RSPCA's Silver Lifesaving Medal. His bravery in the face of danger serves as a powerful reminder that acts of kindness toward animals are not just gestures of care but expressions of courage and compassion.
Recognising 200 Years of Progress
As we marked the bicentenary of the RSPCA, we reflected on the charity’s incredible journey—from its early days, when Queen Victoria granted it royal patronage in 1840, to its current role as a national leader in animal welfare. Today, the RSPCA continues to embody the spirit of care and stewardship for all creatures, reminding us of the responsibility entrusted to humanity in the book of Genesis: to tend to and protect God's creation.

A Community United for Change
The event was a testament to the power of collaboration. Representatives from animal charities across the region came together, celebrating their shared goals and reaffirming their commitment to improving the lives of animals. It was inspiring to see so many members of the public—families, volunteers, and supporters—participate in this occasion, demonstrating the enduring relevance of the RSPCA's mission in our community.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate 200 years of compassion, the task ahead is clear: to continue building a future where kindness and care guide our actions, both toward animals and each other. In a world that often feels divided, events like Sunday’s service remind us that change begins with empathy, and that the care we offer to animals is a reflection of our collective humanity.
The success of this event at Hull Trinity Church was a shining example of the strength of community spirit. Together, with the support of the RSPCA, local charities, and individuals, we can honour this legacy of kindness—and ensure that it endures for generations to come.
Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and supported this special occasion. Here's to the next 200 years of compassion and care for all creatures, great and small.
