Celebrating 15 Years of PolarSPARC !!!

Time has a remarkable way of flying by and today we celebrate 15 years of PolarSPARC - a remarkable journey that began at the pivotal moment in history - the collapse of Lehman Brothers. What once began as a personal ritual of immersing myself in various subjects and encapsulating their essence as technical notes - now has blossomed into something far greater - a platform for disseminating those insights with others around the world.

Amidst the global uncertainty that followed Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, my dear friend, Sridhar M. S. , urged me to transform my technical notes into a blog platform, providing a source of enlightenment for countless others across the globe. The core tenet of serving a higher purpose and extending a helping hand to others resonated with me, leading me to embrace this idea wholeheartedly.

The moniker PolarSPARC was born from the frozen landscape of that time. "Polar" - an encapsulation of the coldness and stagnation many of us experienced following the collapse of Lehman Brothers. From these depths emerged "SPARC", deliberately spelled with a "C" to symbolize the transformative agent that ignites hope for a brighter future.

Notably, PolarSPARC remains free of distracting ads, allowing the focus to be solely on the subjects at hand. It is a non-commercial endeavor, devoid of any revenue generation, with me personally funding the blog each year. The blog now hosts over 350+ articles across a wide range of topics.

Furthermore, PolarSPARC upholds an inclusive philosophy, shunning any user registration or sign-up process. The articles are open and accessible to all, fostering a sense of openness and free access.

Now, for some interesting facts about PolarSPARC:

• The domain polarsparc.com was registered on Oct 07, 2008 and the blog came live with a simple 'Welcome' message
• The first article was published on October 22, 2008, delving into the world of PThreads using C++
• All the content is created on a Linux desktop using a regular text editor. Yes, you read that right - using the plain old text editor !!! The absence of a suitable HTML authoring tool on Linux (with neither Mac nor Windows at my disposal) led me to embrace this simplicity
• The platform weathered two hacking incidents, the latter stripping away nine years' worth of content. Amidst frustration that nearly spurred the closure of the blog, two unexpected pillars of support - my wife and daughter Seshasri Bhaskar - rallied me to rebuild and persist. It consumed nearly three months of my weekend time to rebuild, with a handful of lost articles, as could not locate the backup for them

As we reached this milestone, had contemplated the idea of an unusual celebration - shutting down the blog, feeling that it had served the purpose it was intended for. But, as heard from many folks about how useful the blog posts are to them, decided to continue this incredible journey until the next milestone.
