Ahead of this year’s Gold Service Scholarship awards ceremony, we wish to celebrate this distinguished industry award by highlighting the unique voices and stories of some of those who have taken part in the scholarship since it was launched in 2012. We will be recalling their journeys through the award process itself, but also reflecting on the impact it has had on their lives and their careers in the hospitality industry.
Since its inception 12 years ago, the Gold Service Scholarship award has aimed to inspire and nurture the UK’s up and coming front-of-house talent in food and beverage through mentoring, travel and placement opportunities, creating the leaders of the future. Entrants are employed full-time in food and beverage service, in any sector of the UK industry, and they must be aged between 22 and 28.
All winning finalists attend a bespoke educational programme at the Lausanne Hotel School in Switzerland, and for the winning Scholar, there is a mix of educational prizes, tailored to the development needs and aspirations of the scholar. This could include one week’s work experience at a world-class establishment, a wine-based study visit, and continuous mentoring. In addition, the scholar is provided with a range of learning and qualification opportunities, customised to their own individual aspirations.

The Gold Service Scholarship not only aims to recognise front-of-house talent through the award process, but it also encourages the development of long-lasting relationships through its growing alumni of competition winning finalists. In 2018, ‘Team Gold’ was launched to help facilitate this. ‘Team Gold’ is made up of winning finalists from every year of the competition since it began.
Through our series of interviews with previous Gold Service Scholars and winning finalists, we aim to offer an insight into the impact that this award has and continues to have on so many. We will be starting with one of the very first finalists from 2012, Daniel Crump.
