Celebrate What's Right with the World

Celebrate What's Right with the World

What seems like yesterday but in reality was a generation ago, one of our favorite things to look forward to in the new year was our annual trip to the Maui Writer's Conference.?

Sam Horn was the M.C. extraordinaire and always made sure participants got to meet and talk story with Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, creators of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series.

The highlight of the conference though was the featured speaker. So we got to see presenters such as Aaron Sorkin, Kent Keith, Mitch Albom, Dave Barry, Ron Howard.

To be honest, one of the most impactful presenters, in my mind is a fellow who lives just an island hop away on Moloka'i, famed National Geographic Photographer Dewitt Jones.

He gave me the answer to the age old question " Is there sound in the forest if nobody is there to hear it? " or the corollary "?Is there beauty in nature if there is nobody around to see it ?"

Here is how Dewitt sees it in his own words:

Someone once said, "The banquet is laid though nobody comes". It's true, you know. Time and again nature has brought light and line and shape together in ways that make my heart dance and my mind rejoice. And there, alone with a sunset, or the light on a rushing stream, or softly falling autumn leaves, I find myself saying, "This would all happen whether or not I was here to see it."

Dewitt also gave me the answer to my ponderings about how can we best cope with all of the challenges we are facing:

"I spent 20 years as a photographer for National Geographic. Every time they sent me out, they would ask me to Celebrate What's Right with the World. I did, and it changed my life. Every day I see images that make me want to celebrate, and have discovered that there is far more right with the world than there is wrong with it."

Celebrate What’s Right with the World… It's a simple yet powerful idea that encourages us look at our world through a more positive lens. If you’re ready to find a perspective that allows you to see more of the possibilities - the very best the world has to offer, then?

Change your lens, change your life.
