I am giving this to the underdogs

Have you seen Hamilton? I have to say, I am a bit obsessed. Not only is it great, beat-thumping music, but it’s based in New York and it’s all about an underdog. I felt like there was so much I could connect to from this story in the way it was told.?

The lyrics that keep bumping through my cranium: “I’m just like my country, I’m young, scrappy and hungry and I’m not giving away my shot!”?

And “Rise up” ?. . . sing it along with me!!

It’s this type of anthem that has always kept me awake at night. I’ve spent many hours laying in the dark thinking, seeking and wondering about what part I have to play in this life. Deep questions like “why did God place these thoughts on my heart” and “what am I supposed to DO with them?”.

There are many people out there like me. It’s highly likely you are one of them. Thinkers. Doers. Action takers.

For whatever reason, God has given me the gift of words. I wrote my way into university and headed like a bullet train toward my goal of “making a lot of money” as a divorce lawyer focused on advocating for women. I lack many things, specificity is not one of them. It’s important that you notice the “making a lot of money” part is first. That is what pulled me away from the “how” and instead brought me into the world or professional sales five days after graduation deferring my law school pursuits.??

In the world of professional sales I was a minority, an underdog. It is truly a “boys club”. My first week on the job my sales manager brought the group of 30 salespeople together for a meeting and asked us to look to the right and the left. He said, take note of who you see and say goodbye to them. The odds are against you that both of you will last through the week.?

That was sobering, but yet not unfamiliar territory for me. I dug in and worked hard. I got results. I was not the best, I was not a natural, but I was a quick study and watched carefully. I paid attention to the finesse and nuances of those who were the best.?

I am sure you can see now, more than ever why I loved Hamilton.?
