Celebrate Pride Month with the Co-op Solutions Pride Alliance ERG

June is a time of celebration for the LGBTQ+ community. This month we join the Co-op Pride Alliance employee resource group (ERG) in remembering and celebrating the progress made toward equality while recognizing the change that is still needed. We stand with them in celebrating the 1969 Stonewall Uprising which sparked the movement that called for equal rights and protections for lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, queer/questioning, and otherwise identified (LGBTQ+) people worldwide.

At Co-op we aim to create a diverse, inclusive, and accepting community of individuals, serving as allies to our LGBTQ+ employees and friends. ?This month as we join them in celebrating a variety of events and festivities, we ask you to keep the following tips in mind:

• Always be respectful. Photograph mindfully and be sure to ask permission before sharing a post on social media. Use the correct pronouns; ask if you are unsure. Pride is a judgment-free zone. You will see many forms of expression and you must respect all forms even if they are different from your own.?
• Bring a friend, especially if it’s your first time. Don’t have anyone to go with? Reach out to the Pride Alliance ERG to find a local team member!?
• Come prepared; some events last all day. You will probably walk a lot if it’s an outdoor event, so dress comfortably, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Pack bottles of water and snacks.???
• Take regular safety precautions. Events can bring in thousands of people so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and follow any guidelines.?
• Have fun! Wear your Pride and ally clothing. Meet new people. Share your stories.?

While Pride month is meant to be a celebration, it is also important to remember that it can be a difficult time for members of the community, their allies, and beyond. Be cognizant that celebrating openly is not a reality for everyone, and it is a privilege to have the ability to celebrate.

This year during Pride, remember the reason behind the celebrations: to support the LGBTQ+ community by advocating love, achievement, and progress. Pride is a beautiful reminder that everyone is valid no matter how you dress, identify or love.
