Quick Tips Corner: Who does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protect?

Passed into law in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the most comprehensive legislation protecting the rights of people with disabilities in the United States. The ADA provides protection in the realms of I) employment, II) public entities and transportation, III) public accommodations, IV) telecommunications, and V) anti-retaliation and coercion. A disability does not need to be permanent or profound to be protected under the ADA, leading disability to be a much broader category than some would believe. Here are 5 communities that are protected under the ADA:

  1. People with mental illnesses, including PTSD, schizophrenia, and anxiety
  2. Neurodivergent and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and Down’s Syndrome
  3. Deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, visually impaired, and DeafBlind people
  4. Chronic health conditions, such as HIV, multiple sclerosis, and cancer
  5. People who use mobility aids, including wheelchairs, crutches, and prosthetic limbs

1 in 4 adult Americans have a disability and globally, about 15% of the population have disabilities, making disability the world’s largest minority. Equal rights and opportunities for the disability community starts with protective legislation like the ADA.??

In this article for ABC News , reporter Kiara Alfonseca tells the story of Melissa Gates, a physically disabled woman who endured an arduous journey to secure her government job at NASA.
