My son and I visited Cedar Point last year, which is my first return in over 20 years and my have times changed. I grew up with The Gemini, Corkscrew and the classic Blue Streak. They all now appear to be “Kiddie Rides” in comparison to their modern day counterparts. Having always been a roller coaster thrill seeker, no coaster tipped my courage like the Top Thrill Dragster. Wow. I had to take a moment after that experience while my son was clamoring to go ride it again…and again…and again.
The thing about roller coasters that is so unique is the thrill of danger. However, safety is secured if the rider simply follows the rules: buckle up, shoulder harness down, hands and feet in the car (albeit hands up is a group favorite when descending down the mammoth hills of Millennium Force). Is it scary? Yep. Exhilarating? Check.
A successful ride is one that produces a full range of emotions from courage, to fear to sense of accomplish and for the older population, relief! Notice that a successful roller coaster ride does NOT include jumping off! As scary as they can be, the courage of riding out those monster hills, bending through those terrorizing twists and facing those upside down on those 360 degree corkscrews will endure you to the end where the world is still again and peace is reached. Given the recent turbulence in the stock markets, we should all keep this in mind. The world is not ending, we have seen this before and we will see it again. So, stay the course, keep calm and put your hands up every now and then!
