CEDAR AS CLADDING MATERIAL
Mario van Leeuwen
Expert advice in fa?ade design and engineering, TWEHA is the undisputed b2b world leader in the field of bonded fa?ade cladding.
TWEHA is usually involved in ventilated fa?ade cladding with panels of different, mostly beautiful and durable, materials.
However, we are moved to grief when we see a fa?ade cladded with cedar wood. Cedar is a durable softwood timber usually sourced in North America. Its colour is beautiful brownish red and because of its durable properties it has been used in recent years as a cladding for buildings.
But even the most durable type of wood must be protected against penetrating moisture. In humid conditions, every type of wood will absorb moisture and release it in dry weather.
In the recent applications of cedar wood as a cladding, it is evidently insufficiently realized that the wood must be protected. It usually looks terrible in wet weather. A really miserable look, having a dark, wet and blotchy appearance.
So it is worth considering whether this cladding is more suitable for buildings with a dryer climate than in the North of Europe.
See photograph above, it is worth noting that this building has been completed within the last three years.
