Cebu Pacific and Mactan-Cebu International Airport launch innovative ground ops initiative

The Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific, is working with Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) to launch a new sustainability initiative. Keeping pace with airports across the globe that leverage new technologies to reduce their environmental impact, MCIA and Cebu are testing new bridge mounted equipment (BME).

The innovative system uses a fixed power unit (FPU) and a pre-conditioned air (PCA) unit to provide the aircraft with ground power and cabin cooling without using the aircraft’s jet fuel-powered auxiliary power units (APUs). In addition to sustainability benefits, this also reduces costs for the airline.

Highlighting the significance of this for the Philippines’ aviation industry, Lei Apostol, CEB Vice President for Customer Service Operations said:

“Cebu Pacific fully supports Mactan Cebu International Airport’s ground power initiatives. This represents a crucial step in creating a sustainable future for Philippine aviation. We are honoured to be the first airline to use this technology at MCIA.”

Chief Executive Officer of Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Athanasios Titonis echoed this sentiment, adding:

“International airports like Hong Kong, Zurich, Dublin and Munich have adopted these innovative solutions to minimize their ecological footprint, and MCIA is thrilled to join these airports and hopeful about its impact in the global sustainability movement.”
