In the last year, I have observed the role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) as it evolved and established its status as one of the most valuable emerging C-Suite positions in today’s turbulent business environment. The CDO has gained such notoriety that is has drawn comparisons with superheroes, rock stars, miracle workers and even the humble gardener. Some of these metaphors suggest that the CDO is an almost ethereal entity without flaw; however, this perception has ironically perhaps done the CDO a great disservice. Let me explain.
Initially, I wanted to delve into the similarities between the numerous juxtapositions which have been used to define the CDO. But truly, what does a superhero, rockstar, miracle worker and gardener have in common? If you have any suggestions please let me know! I’d rather like to focus on their differences, why? Gartner states that although 90% of large organizations will have hired a CDO by 2019, only 50% will be hailed a success with one of the main challenges being the integration of culture between the business and the CDO. So in some ways the CDO should be a Chameleon and adapt their skillsets to the needs of the organisation, however, said organisation must also set reasonable expectations accompanied with a well-defined mandate forged in partnership with the CDO.
So, as I once again delve into the complex, demanding and expansive world of the CDO in preparation for the CDO Forum, Europe 2017, I think the major theme here is the ability to evolve to remain competitive. Research studies have shown that reptiles such as the chameleon use colour-changing for a multitude of reasons including, blending to their environment, body heat regulation and to send messages to others. Although there are subtle nuances, the CDO in many ways shares very similar aims including: adapting their skills in a business context, regulating data assets and being the visionary that drives transformation by aiding other’s in seeing the value in data-centric initiatives.
As the dialogue regarding the CDO progresses and matures, so shall Corinium’s content and subsequent conferences so we may continue to provide highly relevant materials to CDOs globally.
Do get in touch if you are interested in shaping the conversation which will culminate in the CDO Forum, Europe 2017 where we will be joined by over 100 CDOs as they discuss their experiences in consolidating data leadership.
