CBD Use in Beauty and Cosmetic Products

CBD (cannabidiol) has gained increasing popularity over the past few years. One of the areas that have earned significant attention is the potential for CBD helping in the management of skin conditions,[1]?making beauty products one of the top growth markets. CBD is now readily available in many beauty products such as oils, makeup, shampoos, lotions, creams, and more.

CBD is one of many cannabinoid compounds obtained from the cannabis plant. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning that applying it to the skin will not have psychotropic effects. Oils extracted from the plant that contains a high concentration of CBD are known as CBD oils, which is the ingredient used in many of the current beauty products being developed.

CBD may potentially benefit the skin by:

  • Regulating oil production:?Although current research is limited, studies in public domain have suggested that CBD could provide a new method in the management of acne.[2]?CBD may potentially have effect on the skin cells that produce sebum, sebocytes. Because acne is related to overworked sebaceous-gland production, CBD may aid in suppressing acne breakouts by helping to regulate oil production within the sebaceous glands.[3]
  • Helping to Reduce inflammation:?Based on current cumulative data in public domain, CBD may help to reduce skin inflammation. When applied topically to the skin, CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the epidermis,?which may offer benefits including reducing inflammation and itchiness.[4]
  • Providing hydration and moisturization:?Some studies have indicated that?CBD may have a moisturizing effect on the skin.[5]?In addition to the skin, hair and nails may also benefit from CBD because it's rich in fatty and amino acids.
