Caveman, Fire and Generative AI

Have you ever imagined our life today without fire. Fire seems to be an integral part of our lives and is very much part of our direct or indirect activities.

Now lets go back in time and visualize the day when cavemen came across the fire, witnessing its mesmerizing dance, felt its warmth, and experienced both its potential for destruction and its capacity to provide light and heat. At first, they likely approached fire with caution, aware of its dangerous nature. The raw power and unpredictability of the flames would have inspired both fear and curiosity. However, as they observed the fire’s behavior and learned to control it, they began to recognize its remarkable potential as a tool and a source of immense benefit.

This process of understanding the benefits of fire and taming it might have took long time (probably decades or even centuries). The learning experience might also have included some bad experiences where fire had shown its destructive nature and hurt them in a way or other.

Fast forward to 2023, where we are witnessing the rising popularity of Generative AI and Large Language Models. An analogy could be drawn between the technology of Generative AI with fire and that of Companies / Enterprises with that of Caveman. We seem to be curious to understand how it works and what benefits can be reaped, but at the same time cautious to use it due to its potential disadvantages like bias, data security, Intellectual Property etc.

Eventually, as we got to understand potential of fire and how to use it for benefit, we will definitely also be able to realize and adapt Generative AI and use it for the benefit and at the same time, minimizing the threats or disadvantages which come along with it.

Going back in time, imagine if there would have been an another cavemen (from a different tribe) who already knew how to tame, use and control the fire, the widespread adoption of fire would have been fast forwarded and might have took much lesser time.

Drawing the analogy back, IT / ITES partners can play the role of that friend who can help the companies / enterprises to learn more about Generative AI with its potential benefits, probable disadvantages and what all can be achieved with the technology thus addressing to the questions, myths and making it comfortable to control and adapt the technology.

To conclude, Generative AI and Large Language models are the latest trends having its own benefits and disadvantages.
