Caution: Power Platform Chaos Ahead?

Caution: Power Platform Chaos Ahead?

Building Power Platform apps without governance is like constructing a house without blueprints - chaotic, inefficient, structurally dangerous, and costly to fix down the road.

Imagine a bustling startup, "InnovateTech," bursting with enthusiasm to innovate. In their rush to create solutions, they began building Power Platform apps, workflows, and databases haphazardly, without any thought to organization or governance.

Soon this promising startup found themselves lost in a tangled mess, facing duplicated efforts, security issues, costly rework, and more.

"We wasted so much time and money creating the same solutions in different teams," lamented InnovateTech's CTO. "It was like the Wild West until we got a handle on Power Platform governance."

Has your team experienced duplication of efforts because of siloed Power Platform development?

Proper use of environments, solutions, and connection references provides the structure needed to streamline development, ensure security, facilitate maintenance, and optimize costs.

Think of it like organizing those dreaded cables behind the tv. With some discipline ("cable ties") upfront, everything becomes easier to manage long-term.

"Implementing proper Power Platform governance was like getting our house in order," explained InnovateTech's CTO. "Our workflows improved 80% within 6 months."

That could be you ??

What are some of the pain points you've experienced from lack of Power Platform governance? Share your insights below so we can address these issues together!

Our take at Collab365...

The latest Collab365 Weekly Digest (hosted by Jon M. and Connor Deasey ) offers practical guidance to instill governance best practices from the start. Watch this short video to see demos of utilizing environments and solutions to create order out of potential chaos:

The latest Collab365 Weekly Digest video offers several practical takeaways:

  • Environments provide isolated spaces for secure app development and testing without impacting end users. A thoughtful environment strategy is crucial.
  • Administrative control over permissions is vital to properly manage environments and secure data.
  • Solutions encapsulate components for easy management and migration between environments. They are key for streamlined ALM.
  • Connection references decouple apps from connections, enabling flexibility.
  • Managed environments add policies for governance, security, and access control.
  • Resources should be managed carefully to optimize costs when migrating solutions between environments.
  • Following governance best practices from the start results in more efficient, better structured, and cost-effective Power Platform utilization.

Final thoughts

Let's steer our Power Platform ships carefully together, relying on solid governance principles as our blueprints, so we can sail smoothly toward our innovation goals. With some forethought, we can avoid Power Platform pandemonium and set our teams up for success.

Our whole Microsoft Tenant is off course. Governance exists for SharePoint sites getting created by a central group, but not Teams. Anyone can create things with Power Apps and Power Automate without any governance. We're growing beyond what is a reasonable pace for the information workers that we do have. I spend a lot of time asking people "What are you trying to achieve?" when they already arrived at a solution without giving thoughts to others.
