CATL Breaks Ground on Hong Kong’s First Battery Swap Station, Expanding Beyond Mainland China

CATL (SHE: 300750), a global leader in power battery innovation, has officially begun construction of its first battery swap station in Hong Kong. This marks a bold step in expanding its battery swap business beyond the Chinese mainland and into international markets, signaling a significant milestone in the development of sustainable energy infrastructure in the region.

In a joint announcement on January 13, CATL, FAW Hongqi, and Dragon Rise New Energy confirmed that construction is underway for the Choco-SEB battery swap station on Ping Che Road in Fanling, New Territories. As Hong Kong’s first-ever battery swap station designed for passenger cars, the project highlights the city’s accelerating push toward green energy adoption.

The Choco-SEB (Swapping Electric Blocks) system, CATL’s proprietary technology, promises to revolutionize the EV experience. Drivers can exchange depleted batteries for fully charged units in just a few minutes, eliminating long charging waits and addressing range anxiety—a major hurdle in EV adoption. By providing this fast and efficient solution, CATL aims to make electric vehicles more practical and accessible for everyday use.

“This station marks a new stage for Hong Kong’s energy infrastructure and reflects our commitment to fostering a greener future,” CATL said in a statement. The facility aligns with Hong Kong’s broader goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, as the city ramps up efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The project has garnered strong support from CATL’s partners. FAW Hongqi and Dragon Rise New Energy emphasized the station’s potential to set a benchmark for similar initiatives in other cities. “This is a game-changer for Hong Kong’s transition to clean energy,” said a spokesperson from Dragon Rise. “We’re excited to bring this pioneering solution to life and inspire more sustainable mobility projects across the region.”

Hong Kong’s first battery swap station is part of a larger plan to create a comprehensive EV ecosystem, potentially paving the way for more such facilities in the future. Industry experts predict that CATL’s innovative approach could spark broader interest in battery swapping technology, helping drive EV adoption on a global scale.

As the Choco-SEB system takes root in Hong Kong, it’s poised to redefine how cities approach sustainable transportation. The project underscores CATL’s leadership in green energy and its dedication to pushing the boundaries of battery technology.

With construction already underway, anticipation is building for the station’s operational launch, which promises to bring new levels of convenience and sustainability to Hong Kong’s streets. For CATL and its partners, this marks the beginning of an exciting journey toward revolutionizing urban mobility.
