CATIA and the Fighter Jets Market

A few days ago, I received some alerts on the publication by Canada of the list of suppliers approved to bid in the future fighter competition for F/A-18 Hornet replacement.
Most of you know my interest in both Dassault Systèmes' CATIA, the world's leading solution for product design and experience, and Aerospace & Defence industry (and more specifically in fighter jets). So I just would like here to illustrate in a few words the use of CATIA in these different military aircraft programs selected to compete by Canada, and by some other countries.
Following first the order of the previous article on Canada:
Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II - designed with CATIA
freely inspired by
Boeing FA-18 Super Hornet - not designed with CATIA
But Boeing and Dassault Systèmes announced on July 25th, 2017 an extended partnership
"Boeing will expand its deployment of Dassault Systèmes’ products across its commercial aviation, space and defense programs to include the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform."
The future of the Super-Hornet is maybe in Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform, and CATIA.

Dassault Aviation Rafale - designed with CATIA

Conclusion : four out of the five competitors for the Canadian F/A-18 Hornet replacement have then be designed with CATIA. And Boeing, which proposes the fifth candidate, has decided to use the Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform for its digital transformation.
That's a good situation for CATIA on this market I think.
If we now take a look at some other on going or future RFP (requests for proposals) for fighter jets in the world:
- Finland will issue RFP to replace its F/A-18 Hornet by either Airbus Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing FA-18E/F Super Hornet or F-15 Eagle, Dassault Aviation Rafale, Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II or F-16 Fighting Falcon, or Saab Gripen E.
We have here some "newcomers" in this list for Finland.
Boeing F-15 Eagle - not designed with CATIA
Here again, following the extended partnership between Boeing and Dassault Systèmes, the future of the F-15 Eagle is maybe in the Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform and CATIA.

- Belgian F-16 will be replaced by either Lockheed Martin F-35, Dassault Aviation Rafale or Airbus Eurofighter Typhoon.
- Swiss Confederation will probably launch this year new RFP to replace its F-5 and FA-18 fighters by either Airbus Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing FA-18E/F Super Hornet, Dassault Aviation Rafale B/C, Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II or Saab Gripen E.
- In India, the situation is a little bit more complex and will probably be clarified this year. Two main contracts have to be put in place.
First, an Indian Navy RFP will probably be launched in the coming months, and answers are expected from Boeing (FA-18 Super Hornet), Saab (Gripen M concept) and Dassault Aviation Rafale M.

Second, for the Indian Air Force, new RFI (request for information) are expected, allowing Lockheed Martin to propose both its F-16 and F-35, Saab its Gripen and Dassault Aviation its Rafale.
Here again, for this RFI, all the competitors have been designed with CATIA.
I know there are some others RFI/RFP for fighter jets on going in the world, but I only want here to give some main examples.
I think we can say CATIA is clearly the market leader in fighter jets design.
Bonus: there is an amazing fighter jet which is never proposed in answers to RFP (for some political and technological reasons). Guess what: designed with CATIA

6 年LOUIS TSAGUE, Ph/D-ENG- colonel CATIA IS A VERY GOOD AIRCRAFT DESIGN SOFTWARE.YOUR PUBLICATION ABOUT CATIA APPLICATIONS IN AIRCRAFT DESIGN IS A GOOD WORK I 've as senior Engineer in aeronautics dreamed to learn how to use CATIA, it seems that there's no job nowadays for engineers without CATIA experience. Thank you for your publication about CATIA

6 年Great article Alain. I knew CATIA was the defacto in Commercial and Business aviation but it seems it has also become the defacto in military aircraft as well. Good to know!
